Established in 2006, AWIC is a volunteer community-based planning board whose members are knowledgeable about labour force development issues in the District of Algoma. AWIC‘s objective is to engage communities in a local labour market research and planning process that will lead to cooperative efforts to find local solutions to local labour market issues. The Algoma Workf
orce Investment Corporation – or AWIC for short – serves the Algoma region through the delivery of objective, accurate, and future-focused analysis on employment, workforce, and economic trends. We work in partnerships with local businesses, government organizations, industry associations, educational institutions, and not-for-profits throughout Algoma. We believe in connecting our community and building a cooperative network of people and resources committed toward the common goal of a healthy, thriving economy in which everyone can participate. In all of our work, we strive to serve the Algoma region as a trusted community resource, providing data and insight in support of a diverse and talented workforce that contributes to a prosperous community. Through collaboration and partnership, our work prepares all Algoma residents for the workforce challenges and opportunities of today and the future. The area includes the north shore of Lake Superior and Lake Huron from Dubreuilville northwest to Spanish in the east. The district is divided into the following three sub-districts: Superior East; that includes the communities of White River, Wawa, and Dubreuilville, the Central Region and Sault Ste. Marie; and East Algoma comprised of the many communities including Elliot Lake, Johnson Township and Blind River. AWiC’s district also has the First Nation reserves of Michipicoten, Garden River, Thessalon, Mississauga, Sagamok, Serpent River and Batchewana. First Nations along the North Shore are also represented by; White Fish Lake and the North Shore Tribal Council (NSTC). Website:
