Big River is a book arts studio, performing conservation and restoration of older books, custom book

At Big River Bindery we practice the art of the book: conserving and repairing books and paper items, making custom books and boxes for special occasions, and printing books and ephemera with custom designs using letterpress printing. Located in the greater Atlanta, Georgia area, Big River Bindery printers and binders use vintage wood and metal type and antique presses and binding equipment, some over 100 years old. Visitors are welcome to drop by during our open hours and by appointment.

I had a great time last night at CONTACT Photobook Lab hearing about photo books and the Contact Photobooklab from Brian St. Denis. A great presentation and show and tell. Thanks to the The Alcuin Society for organizing the talk.

We had a great first day at the book arts workshop in Fernie, BC. Our tunnel books came out amazing, and the students all worked so hard. Today we move on to Carousel Books. Can’t wait to see what the students make today.

While in Fernie, I was delighted to visit the studio of Mike Hepher of Clawhammer Press. A converted garage holds his collection of presses and type, where he makes amazing prints with linoleum, wood, and type. He even let me try out the Vandercook. Thanks for the great tour Mike! If you’re ever in BC, be sure to make a detour to visit.

I’m out of the shop and away from Scarborough for the weekend, teaching in Fernie, BC for the Fernie Fibre Arts Guild. I’m excited to be teaching on the road again and can’t wait to meet the students and make some books. Plus we don’t have views like this back home.

Over the weekend I had a chance to visit A.A.N. in Toronto. It was an amazing shop work so much type and so many presses. They’re making lovely prints and I can’t wait to see what else they make.

I just finished an amazing week with a great set of students at my CBBAG workshop. We decorated paper, made two hard cover books, and make a preservation enclosure. A busy but rewarding week.
