Across Caledon's mix of clay flats and rockier, thinner soil near the escarpment, compaction can look different from property to property, but the fix is the same. Aerating every fall, even on a lawn that looks okay, keeps soil loose enough for roots, water, and nutrients to actually get where they need to go.

🌱 Slit seeding cuts small grooves directly into the soil and deposits seed right into them — giving you far better seed-to-soil contact than just scattering seed on top. Spring is actually a tougher time to establish new grass because of unpredictable weather and w**d competition.

🌱 Not sure if it's actually grubs? Try the tug test: grab a handful of grass in a damaged patch and pull. If it lifts away like a loose carpet with no roots holding it down, that's a strong sign grubs have been feeding underneath. MYTH: If I haven't seen beetles in my yard, I don't have grubs. TRUTH: By the time damage shows up, the adult beetles that laid the eggs are long gone. Grubs live and feed underground, out of sight, for weeks before any brown patches appear — so the absence of beetles doesn't mean the absence of grubs.
