Knowing your Style helps you understand what makes a day awesome or crappy.

Knowing you are going into a day that is outside your comfort zone (and includes situations that reduce your motivation), you can plan for extra breaks and recovery time.

Knowing what motivates you helps you curate your day so it's more enjoyable.

Recently, I did an activity with an organization where I divided them into groups and asked them two describe their Best Day and their Worst Day.

The C styles made colour-coded chart. Here is what they said:

Best Day:

• No meetings.
• Get stuff done.
• Being left alone.
• Work is meaningful and valued.
• Recommendations are put into action.

Worst Day:

• No direction.
• Making big decisions.
• Not enough time.
• Being taken advantage of.
• Cleaning up someone else's mess.

In 2014, I ended up so sick, it took two trips to emergency to get rehydrated and medicated so I could improve.

I'd been pushing too hard and my body rebelled. I had ignored the warning signs, so it threw up a neon sign I couldn't ignore.

In the 11 years since, burnout has skyrocketed. It's a real issue we need to face.

In my December blog post, I focus on some of the causes (beyond just working too hard) and what we can do (as individuals and as leaders).

The Burnout Trap: Recognizing the Patterns and Breaking the Cycle We often ignore the tangible, and intangible, costs of burnout. We say things like: “Just power through it.” “I can sleep when I’m dead.” “Strong people don’t need breaks.”

Knowing your Style helps you understand what makes a day awesome or crappy.

Knowing you are going into a day that is outside your comfort zone (and includes situations that reduce your motivation), you can plan for extra breaks and recovery time.

Knowing what motivates you helps you curate your day so it's more enjoyable.

Recently, I did an activity with an organization where I divided them into groups and asked them two describe their Best Day and their Worst Day.

The S styles made a detailed list. Here is what they said:

Best Day:

• Listen to others' opinions and knowledge while working on things I know.
• Working with people you are closest to and work well with.
• Good one-on-ones with someone.
• Getting support from others/talking things through with others before making a decision.
• Working on a task when I know what to do, expectations are known even if it's tedious.
• Whether collaboratively/solo, when things can be checked off the list, and you can celebrate it.
• When you have a good work/life balance.

Worst Day:

• When you can't tell what is a priority in a list of already demanding tasks.
• Asked to present while under prepared.
• Being given another project on top of an already heavy workload.
• Making decisions all day, then deciding on dinner.
• Making decisions with multiple people.
• Doing something wrong, and being called out on it.
• When a decision needs to be made, but I can't talk it through with others.
• Last minute requests.
• Managing people's expectations.
• When under pressure, someone is then short with you (compounded pressures are not appreciated).
• Being asked why when the opportunity to do research has not been given.

The I styles chatted for the first 10 minutes and then came up to get their paper. When presenting, they mentioned that they were catching up and then remembered they had to do the task. Here is what they said:

Best Day:
• Spontaneity
• Social
• Completion

Worst Day:
• Prolonged Isolation
• Disappointing Others
• Detailed Planning

The D styles took about 2.5 minutes and just got it done. Here is what they said:

Best Day:
• No one bothers me
• Nothing emotional
• Tasks completed

Worst Day:
• Too many opinions
• Too many emotions
• Nothing accomplished

𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽:

You don't need to overhaul your life to start preventing burnout. Start with ONE small boundary experiment this week:

✅ Don't check email for one full weekend
✅ Turn off Teams notifications after 6 PM
✅ Take a full lunch break without working
✅ Say no to one request that's not your responsibility

Track what happens. (Spoiler: Usually nothing bad.)

Most of what feels urgent isn't. Try one boundary and see for yourself.
