Mid-Day Light Might Be Convenient… But It Isn’t Always Kind

We’ve all done it.

“Let’s just shoot at noon. It’s easier for everyone’s schedule.”

I get it. Mid-day is convenient.

But if you want portraits that feel soft, flattering, and timeless, the middle of the day is often the hardest time to create them.

Here’s why:

☀️ Squinting eyes because the sun is directly overhead.

😬 Harsh shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin that can make anyone look tired.

✨ Blown-out hot spots in the background that pull your eye away from what matters most—you.

As photographers, we’re always chasing beautiful light because light is what creates emotion in an image. It’s the difference between a photo that simply documents a moment and one that makes you stop and feel something.

That’s why you’ll sometimes see me waiting a few extra minutes for the sun to move behind a cloud or drop just a little lower in the sky.

It isn’t because I’m delaying your session.

It’s because I’m creating the very best portraits I can for you.

Trust me—the magic is worth the wait. 💛

✨ Would you rather have the most convenient time… or the most beautiful portraits? Let me know in the comments.

Have you ever noticed how we keep moving the goalposts?

I’ll book photos after I lose 20 pounds.
After I tone my arms.
After I grow my hair.
After… after… after…

But here’s the freaking truth…

There is no guarantee you’ll be smaller next year. S**t, you might gain weight. Life might get busier. Your kids will definitely get older. And none of us are promised tomorrow.

So why are we waiting to prove we’re worthy of being remembered?

Your family doesn’t see your weight.
Your friends don’t love you because of the number on the scale.
The people who matter see your laugh, your kindness, your hugs, your eyes, and the way you make them feel.

The only person judging your body that harshly is you.

You don’t need a smaller body to deserve beautiful portraits.

You deserve to exist in your family’s story exactly as you are today.

Because someday, these photographs won’t be about how much you weighed.

They’ll be about the fact that you were here.

Stop waiting for the “perfect” version of yourself.

She’s already enough.

I spent this past weekend with my favourite photographers at Camp & Create. I am so grateful for the bonds that this event has fostered and the creativity is off the chart. Thank you all!

Some graduations are measured by a diploma.

Others are measured by the silence that follows.

As Rian steps into this next chapter, her family isn’t just celebrating what she’s accomplished—they’re already feeling the space she’ll leave behind.

Her mom will miss the deep conversations that somehow made everything make sense. The car rides with the music turned all the way up, singing without a care in the world. The hockey games that became cherished family traditions. Most of all, she’ll miss Rian’s presence.

Because Rian is the kind of person who makes a house feel like home.

She loves deeply. She is thoughtful beyond her years. Every day, she makes time for her grandparents. She checks in with every member of her family, simply because that’s who she is. She reminds us that kindness isn’t something you say—it’s something you live.

As parents, we spend years teaching our children how to leave us.

And when they finally do, we realize they were teaching us something too.

How to love without conditions.
How to be present.
How to build a life that leaves people better than you found them.

Congratulations, Rian.

The world is about to discover what your family has always known—that your greatest achievement won’t be the diploma in your hands, but the heart you carry wherever you go.

Because some moments deserve to live forever.

Dear Spencer,

Today isn't just about receiving a diploma.

It's about closing the chapter where so many people spend years trying to fit into boxes they never belonged in.

High school has a way of convincing us that popularity matters. That labels last forever. That being different is something to hide. That it's safer to blend in than to stand out.

But here's the beautiful truth...

None of that gets to come with you.

From this moment forward, you get to decide who you want to become.

You get to chase dreams that seem impossible.
You get to find people who celebrate exactly who you are.
You get to discover strengths you never knew you had.
You get to change your mind, reinvent yourself, and write a story that belongs entirely to you.

The world outside those school walls is so much bigger than the hallways you've walked every day.

Your kindness matters more than your popularity.
Your character matters more than your reputation.
Your courage to be yourself matters more than fitting in ever did.

As I photographed Spencer, I couldn't help but think about everything that lies ahead. Not because the future is certain—but because it's full of possibility.

So here's to new beginnings.
To taking chances.
To becoming the person you've always wanted to be.

Congratulations, Spencer.

The best part of your story is just beginning.

Like so many women, she probably had a list of reasons why she should not book a shoot.

Wait until she felt more confident.
Wait until she lost a few pounds.
Wait until life slowed down.
Wait until she felt "photogenic."

But here she is.

And what a shame it would have been if this portrait had never existed.

Because portraits aren't about perfection.

They're about preservation.

They're about capturing a moment in time that will never come again. The confidence that's growing. The dreams being chased. The woman becoming exactly who she's meant to be.

Years from now, this portrait won't be admired because of the dress, the hair, or the makeup.

It will be cherished because she was here.

Because someone she loves will hold this portrait and remember her laugh, her strength, her personality, and the way she made people feel.

Luxury portraiture isn't about creating a photograph.

It's about creating an heirloom.

A piece of family history.

A reminder that your story deserves to be seen, celebrated, and remembered.

Don't wait until you feel worthy of being photographed.

The people who love you already know you are.

I am so behind on my sneak peeks. I have been photographing this gorgeous creature since she was probably 7. It was bittersweet doing her grad portraits. Congratulations Hannah - you are going to do great things. Alison, get a tissue.

Your business has evolved.
Your photos should too.

The good news?

You don’t need to be photogenic.
You just need someone who knows how to direct humans who feel awkward in front of a camera.

(That’s literally my specialty.)

If you can relate, give me a shout.

Meet Jenni!! Realtor, Wife, Mother, Business Owner Extraordinaire. Just like most women Jenni was reluctant to update her head shots. She wanted to lose weight first, she needed to update her hair, she was too busy with life and will find time when things slow down. The final push was Jenni had recently hired a virtual assistant, and she was begging her for more images to use in her social media content.

We met with Jenni discussed her goals for her head shots, and curated the perfect session for her and these are the results.

Drop a “🖤” if you are on the fence about getting your head shots updated, we would love to chat.
