Because historic cemeteries are heritage assets and abandoned sites are protected as archaeological sites in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is important to have gravestone conservation carried out by trained professionals. Based out of Portugal Cove - St. Philip's, Newfoundland, we are a husband and wife team with a combined 20 years of experience in the heritage sector, excited to focus our passion for preserving the past and spreading awareness of historic spaces. We employ up-to-date stone conservation techniques and operate with a do-no-harm practice. We are dedicated to teaching others about how to lessen their impact on these historic sites through cleaning and repair, and to preserve local heritage. Black Cat offers a range of in-person and remote gravestone and burial ground preservation services, including workshops on gravestone cleaning and simple repair, mapping and historic research, to remote consultations, and we are happy to meet with you via zoom to discuss a project. It's nearly here, the 2026 Cemetery Scavenger Hunt, by TalkDeath! Join us on Sunday, Oct 25th, at the Old Burying Ground, Halifax, starting at 2 pm for all the fun amongst the gravestones!

2 pm: site tour with Craig Ferguson
2:45/3 pm ish: talk on gravestone symbols with Robyn!
3:30 pm: Scavenger Hunt clues drop & the hunt begins!

While this is a super fun event, and we will have free merch to give away (and probably halloween candy), please also remember to be respectful of the dead and not to run in the site. There are lots of low stones and uneven areas!

Are you ready for the TalkDeath Cemetery Scavenger Hunt?? We will be at the Old Burying Ground in downtown Halifax, NS this year with members of the OBG board!

The Scavenger Hunt starts at 3:30PM AT, but come join us earlier for special tours!

🎃 2pm with Craig Ferguson, author of 'Dead in Halifax', will be talking about some of the history of the burial ground!

🎃 2:45/3pm, join us (Robyn & Ian) to learn about some of the iconography you can find at the site, including protective symbols.

Join us for all the fun on Sunday, Oct 25th!
There will be some TalkDeath merch, halloween candy, and fun to be had!

Back in Windsor's Old Parish Burying Ground this afternoon measuring and recording the stones on two of these really unique 'Billboard Monuments'! We have been chatting with the lead researcher of this monument type in Maine, Ron Romano, and he has confirmed that the two monuments we recorded here are the first two identified in Atlantic Canada!
