Black Cat Cemetery Preservation

Black Cat Cemetery Preservation We provide conservation and restoration services for historic cemeteries and gravestones. Interested in sprucing up your community’s historic cemetery?

Repairing those fallen gravestones? Need some research done on a local cemetery? Do you need advice on how to proceed with cleaning a burial ground, while protecting the site? Call Black Cat Cemetery Preservation! Because historic cemeteries are heritage assets and abandoned sites are protected as archaeological sites in Newfoundland and Labrador, it is important to have gravestone conservation ca

rried out by trained professionals. Based out of Portugal Cove - St. Philip's, Newfoundland, we are a husband and wife team with a combined 20 years of experience in the heritage sector, excited to focus our passion for preserving the past and spreading awareness of historic spaces. We employ up-to-date stone conservation techniques and operate with a do-no-harm practice. We are dedicated to teaching others about how to lessen their impact on these historic sites through cleaning and repair, and to preserve local heritage. Black Cat offers a range of in-person and remote gravestone and burial ground preservation services, including workshops on gravestone cleaning and simple repair, mapping and historic research, to remote consultations, and we are happy to meet with you via zoom to discuss a project. Congrats to Jean Claude Roy! We had the opportunity to see his work on display at Battle Harbour Historic Trust last summer, and it was such a treat to enjoy his perspecive of such a special place! 👏👏

This morning, Memorial University will confer the degree of doctor of laws, honoris causa, upon Jean Claude Roy for his immense talent and prolific art, and for his legacy of observing, capturing and celebrating Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich geography and cultural heritage.

What a great idea! There are so many historic burial sites across the Atlantic Provinces, and we'd love to help where we can with them! 🎉

TOM URBANIAK: Nova Scotia should have an annual Cemeteries Day.

Nova Scotia has more than 2,000 documented cemeteries and burial grounds, not to mention the undocumented ones.

Too many of our cemeteries are forgotten, falling over or falling into the water – or simply unloved. Our stories, our memories, our sense of community and our history are fading with these special places.

Cemeteries need a public movement. Cemeteries also need a public moment – a day of focus and appreciation.

One of two Walker headstones that are visible, this one is for James Walker, who died on Christmas day. James has one of the several headstones that Black Cat Cemetery Preservation worked to repair in Chapel Lane Cemetery!

The headstone reads as follows:

"James Walker
1768-1844

Sacred
To the Memory of
James Walker
Brigus
Who Departed this Life
December 25 1844
Aged 76 Years

Requiescat in Pace"

We have huge news friends... we're moving to Nova Scotia!?
Robyn has been offered an excellent position in heritage in NS, and we will be relocating to the mainland. But don't you worry, we are not abandoning you, NL! We have ongoing projects in the province, and new ones from you folks emailing us regularily, and we are working doing regular trips back to the island to work on our beloved NL. We are happy to answer questions via emails and consult virtually on your projects as well, per usual, so nothing will change there! We are sad to be leaving NL, but this is not good bye ❤️

Please send us an email if you have an ongoing project with us and have questions!!

What will change is hopefully taking on some projects in the Maritimes while we are there! We are looking forward to exploring some new areas, and learning about the cemeteries histories in Nova Scotia!
