As National AccessAbility Week wraps up, we'd like to thank the businesses, organizations, and community leaders who are striving to make their workplaces, services, and spaces more accessible and inclusive.

We've made progress, but there's still more work to do. Creating accessible communities and workplaces is an ongoing journey, and every step forward makes a difference.

Before we get back to that work next week, we hope you take some time this weekend to relax, recharge, and enjoy some good weekend vibes. ☀️

Thank you for being part of the movement toward a stronger, more accessible Canada. We look forward to continuing the work together.

Have a great weekend!

It's National AccessAbility Week and today we're encouraging you to think about how we can each work on "Building a strong, accessible Canada."

At InclusionNL, we help businesses and organizations become more accessible and inclusive. That means making sure everyone can take part - at work, in the community and everywhere in between.

Let's keep working together to build a Canada where access is expected and inclusion is for everyone! 💙

Happy National AccessAbility Week!

This week is a time to celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities and recognize the importance of accessibility and inclusion in our communities.

Businesses play an important role in creating spaces where everyone can participate, work, shop, and connect. Small changes can make a big difference, from improving physical access to providing information in accessible formats and creating inclusive workplace practices.

Accessibility benefits everyone. During National AccessAbility Week, we encourage businesses to learn more, take action, and continue building environments where all people feel welcome and included.

We've talked about the Disability Pay Gap before, but sadly, things have not improved. Disabled workers still earn less per hour and per week than their non-disabled counterparts. And the gap is growing because wages for people with disabilities didn't rise as quickly either.

💸Disabled workers earned $2.22 less per hour
💸On average, disabled workers earn 93.8% that of non-disabled workers, which drops to 91.2% when looking at the weekly gap where disabled employees get fewer hours
💸This is nearly $6000 less annually for the SAME work

This continually growing gap shows why real inclusion - fair pay, equitable opportunities and accessible workplaces - still matters!

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, a great opportunity for businesses to think about accessibility and inclusion.

Digital accessibility is about making sure people with disabilities can fully access and participate in workplaces, services, websites, events, and communities.

Creating accessible (physical and digital) spaces is not just the right thing to do; it also helps businesses reach more customers, attract talented employees, and build stronger communities.

Simple steps can make a big difference:
✔️ Use plain language
✔️ Add captions to videos
✔️ Make websites accessible
✔️ Listen to feedback from people with disabilities

Accessibility is an ongoing process, and every step forward matters. Thank you to the businesses and organizations working to build more inclusive communities for everyone.

Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is May 21st and promotes digital inclusion and accessibility for persons with disabilities.

In partnership with Autism@Work, we are offering a special presentation from Jim Escott, a leading expert in digital accessibility and adaptive technologies with more that 25 years experience in corporate, not -for -profit, and government IT departments.

Digital Tools to Accommodate Neurodiverse Employees

Accommodating employees does not have to be difficult or expensive! A lot of challenges can be supported using free or inexpensive apps, adaptive technologies, and by optimizing accessible features that are built into the technologies your teams are already using.

Lie: Disabled people are disabled because they make poor lifestyle choices.
Truth: Disability isn't a choice!
Some disabilities are genetic, some happen due to accident or illness, some are still unexplained.
The truth is that all people, regardless of past choices or behaviour, disabled or not, deserve support, respect and accessibility!

Lie: People with disabilities deserve to be pitied.🥲
Truth: Like every other human, we deserve respect, not pity.
Disabled people are not tragic. We're just existing in a world that was never designed for us, often in a society that still devalues and dehumanizes us. 🙅‍♀️ We don't need to hear "it's so sad that you have to live like that!" or "I feel so sorry for you!" We need you to see the barriers in society and think about how you can help change them.
The truth is, we don't need your pity - we need your action!
