The energy transition runs on nickel, cobalt and copper, and supply is tightening.

Nearly 87% of cobalt consumed in China feeds lithium-ion battery production. Nickel sulfate demand for battery precursors is climbing steadily.

Our Red Cross Lake project returned soil anomalies up to 3,936 ppm Ni, 674 ppm Cu and 230 ppm Co, early-stage indicators but the kind of numbers that warrant follow-up in today's market.

Every AI data centre is a copper-intensive asset, with wiring, busbars, heat exchangers and interconnects all depending on it.

The IEA projects that existing mines will cover only ~80% of copper demand by 2030, leaving a significant supply gap. At our Colchester project, legacy drilling intersected up to 39.97 m grading 1.03% Cu. It's early-stage, but the commodity backdrop for copper discovery has rarely been stronger.

In our last press release, we shared that we had detected a 12‑km magnetic strike, but what does that actually mean?

Here's the brief: underground, there's a long stretch of rock that's pulling on the earth's magnetic field, a signature we often see in zinc-lead systems.

We've also found pyrrhotite, a magnetic mineral that tends to show up alongside those metals. Where the signal breaks up, it hints at faults, places where metal-rich fluids could have pooled.

The next step is drilling, which will tell us whether those structures are indeed hosting zinc and lead mineralization.

Do you know all of Vulcan's ongoing projects?

1.- Carbonear is our SEDEX zinc-lead target in Newfoundland, anchored by a 12-km magnetic horizon.

2.- Colchester is a historic copper mine with gold credits, where legacy drill holes returned up to 39.97 m at 1.03% Cu.

3.- Red Cross Lake adds a battery metals angle, with soil anomalies reaching 3,936 ppm Ni, 674 ppm Cu and 230 ppm Co.

Three distinct projects. Three commodity exposures.

Zinc and lead don't get the headlines that lithium and cobalt do, but they're deeply embedded in the infrastructure we rely on.

Zinc is the primary coating that keeps structural steel from corroding. Lead still powers roughly 85% of U.S. battery demand through lead-acid systems used in vehicles and telecom backup. At Carbonear, our magnetic and geochemical data point directly toward these metals. Steady demand. Local supply potential.

Modern mineral exploration looks nothing like it did 30 years ago.

At Carbonear, we've flown over 1,200 km of airborne surveys using three tools: magnetics to spot iron-bearing rocks underground, electromagnetics to detect zones that could host metals, and LiDAR to build a detailed map of the surface.

Layering all three datasets helps us zero in on the best drill targets, while keeping our footprint on the land as small as possible.

Field work is underway at Carbonear. Airborne surveys have outlined a 12-km magnetic zone roughly 1.5 km wide, a compelling footprint for a SEDEX-style zinc-lead system.

Soil sampling confirms elevated lead and zinc, and legacy drilling averaged 0.2% Zn and 0.17% Pb. We've completed the first hole of the program and will return in spring to finish the remaining five.

The data so far is promising, so watch this space. Click below to read the full report

🔍 Meet Colin Hayes, our Senior Geologist leading geological analysis across Newfoundland and Labrador!

Colin is a Professional Geoscientist (PEGNL) and Memorial University graduate with nearly a decade of experience in mineral exploration and environmental monitoring. Before joining Vulcan, he gained diverse field and analytical experience across provincial and major infrastructure projects.

Since 2021, Colin has been driving our data management, resource modelling, and target generation. His ability to integrate field observations with detailed analysis helps guide drilling programs and advance Vulcan’s precious and base metal projects.

Sometimes exploration means science. Sometimes it means… digging out the quad. 😅
Fieldwork has its challenges, but it’s all part of pushing forward to discover the resources that will power the future.
