We're pleased to announce the recent drilling campaign at our Carbonear Zinc-Lead SEDEX Project is complete.

Following a weather-related pause earlier this year, five drill holes totalling 1,087 meters were drilled in June to test geophysical and geochemical targets. The core is currently being prepared for assaying to determine the grade of mineralization encountered.

Mineral exploration is more than drilling.

Once a mineralised region is targeted, geologists use mapping, remote sensing, geochemical and geophysical surveys to search for deposits. Promising areas are drilled and sampled to test mineral content.

Though risky, strong technical skills and diligent homework improve the odds of discovery.

One question we often get is:

"Why drill if you're not expecting to hit ore?"

A stratigraphic hole helps geologists understand how rock layers are arranged beneath the surface.

By comparing drill core with magnetic and other geophysical data, we build a clearer picture of the geology before targeting the most prospective areas.

Good exploration is a deductive investigative process that leads to increasingly better drilling decisions, or the decision to abandon exploration if possible indicators for a discovery are not present.

Did you know some exploration holes aren't designed to discover ore?

Our first hole at Carbonear was drilled primarily as a stratigraphic hole, meaning its purpose was to understand the sequence of rock layers and compare them with our geophysical surveys.

That information helps us position future drill holes more effectively and improves our understanding of the entire project.

Canada’s rock holds many of the ingredients for the energy transition.

As of March 31, 2026, Vulcan held 24 mineral licences covering 973 claims across Newfoundland and Labrador with a 23.61% stake in Atlas Salt’s Great Atlantic project.

The metal projects have the potential for critical mineral discoveries such as copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt.

Canada identifies 31 minerals as critical. As of March 2025 there were 56 active mines, 31 processing facilities and 171 advanced projects.

The sector already contributes about $40 billion to GDP and 110,000 jobs, and nearly 140 new projects worth $117 billion are planned.

Exploration is where that pipeline begins. Every future discovery starts with identifying and advancing promising ground, which is why projects like ours continue to matter as demand for critical minerals grows.
