For people born without a uterus, the dream of carrying a pregnancy is becoming a reality.

In October 2025, Sinai Health’s Complex Obstetric Surgery team delivered a healthy baby following a uterine transplant. The pregnancy, conceived through IVF with the Mount Sinai Fertility team, was the first of its kind to be carried and delivered in Canada.

The milestone is helping Sinai Health explore what it would take to build a Canadian uterine transplant program and make this care more accessible to patients across the country.

“For many people born without a uterus, the ability to carry a pregnancy has never felt possible,” says Dr. Sebastian Hobson. “This milestone shows that the conversation is changing – from asking whether it's possible to asking how we can make this care available to more Canadians.”
