For most babes, the four-month sleep regression happens around 14–16 weeks of age.

It’s one of the most common regressions - and unlike others, this one is permanent.

Here’s why:

This is the only regression directly tied to a biological change in sleep. Around four months, your baby transitions from newborn sleep patterns into more adult-like sleep cycles.

Wondering if your babe has hit the four-month sleep regression? Here are the most common signs to look for:

✨ More frequent night wakings
✨ Short naps (30–45 minutes)
✨ Suddenly fighting naps or bedtime
✨ Increased fussiness around sleep
✨ Harder transfers to the crib
✨ Waking fully between sleep cycles
✨ Wanting more help to fall back asleep

If your baby was previously sleeping long stretches and suddenly isn’t - this could be why. This isn’t a step backward - it’s a sign your baby’s sleep is maturing.

✨ With these big developmental changes also come changing sleep needs.

To support your babe through this transition:
• Maintain consistent nap and bedtime routines
• Follow age-appropriate wake windows
• Place your babe into their sleep space fully awake (not drowsy, not already asleep)

When babies learn to fall asleep independently, they’re better able to navigate these new sleep cycles overnight.

Is your babe going through the four-month regression? Have you noticed changes in their sleep patterns?

If you’re feeling stuck or unsure where to start, I offer one-on-one support to help your little one build healthy, independent sleep habits - and get your family well rested again. 🤍

3 Reasons Your Toddler Fights Bedtime 😵‍💫👇

1️⃣ They’re overtired
It sounds backwards, but toddlers who stay up too long often have more trouble settling at bedtime.

2️⃣ Inconsistent bedtime routines
Toddlers thrive on predictability. A calm, consistent routine helps signal that sleep is coming.

3️⃣ They’re testing boundaries
Toddlers love control. Extra books, another snack, one more hug… totally normal but consistent boundaries are key.

Bedtime battles are exhausting, but they’re also very common 🤍 A few small changes can make a huge difference.

As a pediatric sleep consultant, here are a few things I always recommend focusing on during a regression 👇

☁️ Bedtime timing matters
Making sure bedtime is aligned with your little one’s needs can make a big difference

☁️ Sleep environment
Is the room dark, calm, and conducive to sleep?

☁️ Consistent bedtime routine
A predictable routine helps signal that sleep is coming

☁️ Stay consistent
Stick to your usual sleep habits as much as possible

✨ And most importantly - remind yourself:

This too shall pass. 🤍

Sleep regressions are temporary, but consistency during this time is key.

If your babe or toddler didn’t previously need extra support to fall asleep, try not to introduce new habits during this phase. Continue encouraging the same healthy sleep foundations you’ve already built.

☁️ Consistency is everything when it comes to sleep.

You’ve probably heard this term before…

✨ Sleep crutches also known as sleep associations are anything we do for or with our babe or toddler to help them fall asleep.

Some common examples include:

• Rocking to sleep
• Feeding (breastfeeding or bottle) to sleep
• Holding your babe to sleep
• Patting or rubbing to sleep
• Lying down with your little one at bedtime

✨ And here’s the important part if this is working for you and your family, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

I never recommend changing something that’s working 🤍

But…

☁️ When it stops working that’s when things can feel really hard.

This was actually my experience too. Feeding and rocking worked… until it didn’t. Once sleep changed, it suddenly felt like no one was sleeping anymore.

✨ Often, this is when parents start noticing:
• Short naps
• Frequent night wakings
• Difficulty settling back to sleep

And it leaves you wondering what changed.

☁️ The good news? There is a reason and so many gentle-supportive ways to improve it.

✨ Does your babe wake up in the middle of the night… and stay awake for 1–2 hours like it’s playtime?

This is what we call a split night and it’s usually a sign that something is off with sleep during the day.

☁️ Why split nights happen:

• Too much daytime sleep
Your babe simply isn’t tired enough to stay asleep overnight

• Wake windows are too short
Not enough sleep pressure built before bedtime

• Bedtime is too early
Causing your babe to “split” their night into two chunks

• Nap schedule needs adjusting
Especially during nap transitions

✨ How to help fix split nights:

• Adjust wake windows to be age appropriate
• Cap total daytime sleep if needed
• Ensure bedtime is aligned with your babe’s sleep needs
• Stay consistent with your response overnight

☁️ Split nights can feel exhausting but they’re usually very fixable with the right schedule adjustments.

✨ Small changes during the day can lead to much more restful nights.
