The Shift to "Cyber-Sleuthing"
The modern Canadian PI spends more time on a keyboard than on a stakeout. OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) has become the industry's most powerful tool. By cross-referencing public databases, property records, and social media footprints, an investigator can often find more information in two hours than they could in two days of physical tailing.

Missing Children's Day - May 25 - Canada's Missing
How you can help:
Canada's Missing provides descriptions and images of missing persons, including details about where they were last seen. Public awareness plays a crucial role in bringing loved ones home.

Please take a moment to review the cases.

Every second counts when a child is missing.

In 2025, 34,189 children were reported missing in Canada. This statistic represents children, families, and communities hoping for answers.

Why does this day matter?

Missing Children’s Day is a moment to reflect. Let’s honour children who have been found, remember those still missing, and support the ongoing work to bring them home. Hope is powerful, but awareness and action are even stronger.

Canada’s Missing shares photos and important details about missing persons across the country. If you recognize something, even if you might think it’s the smallest of details, please submit a tip. Investigators review every tip that comes in.

Let’s search for them until they are home.

Did you know the 1st full time detective aka The "Great Canadian Detective" Was a Sailor?
The roots of the modern industry in Canada are often traced back to John Wilson Murray. Before becoming the first full-time criminal detective for the Government of Ontario in 1875, he was a sailor who supervised prison camps during the U.S. Civil War. His scientific and forensic methodologies laid the groundwork for how investigations are conducted in the country today.

Long before Ontario had an official provincial police force, it had John Wilson Murray.

Most common "Can They Do That?" questions about a P.I. in Canada:
Can a P.I. Technically Make Arrests?
Under Section 494 of the Criminal Code of Canada, any citizen (including a P.I.) can make an arrest if they find someone in the act of committing an indictable offence. However, most reputable P.I.'s avoid this at all costs, preferring to document the evidence and call the police to avoid liability and safety risks.

Did you know about, The "One-Party Consent" Rule?

Canada follows a "One-Party Consent" rule for recording conversations. A PI can record a conversation they are part of without telling the other person. However, they cannot plant a "bug" in a room to record two other people talking—that is illegal.
