The hexagonal honeycomb.

Why do bees use the hexagon as their favourite shape? There are many theories as to why or how, but it all comes down to this shape being the most efficient use of space and wax while still fulfilling needs such as housing young, holding honey, and housing the Queen Bee herself 🐝 Most honeycomb actually starts out as circular tubes, but morphs into hexagons due to the heat and compression inside the hive

Bees are able to control the moisture content of the honey in their hive by fanning their wings to reach the perfect percentage of moisture, every time. Once the honey has reached optimal moisture, the bees cap the honeycomb with wax that has to be taken off during harvesting so that we can get that liquid gold.

Did you know that honey is not only a great sweetener in tea, but it also has many health benefits?

🍯 Honey has antioxidant and anti-inflamatory properties, can be used as a natural cough suppressant (our familiy's favourite use of it at this time of year), and may help with gut health.

🍯 Honey also has topical wound and burn benefits, and has been used for centuries as such.

Let's hear it for the bee! 🐝

They can travel up to 5km to collect, have different positions and jobs in the hive depending on age, and when they get mad they smell like banana medicine.

These incredible little animals have a giant impact on the world. The syrup of their labour tastes pretty good too 🍯

Did you know?

That all of the worker bees in the hive are actually female! Worker bees are the ones who nurse the young, go out to collect, take care of the queen, clean the hive, etc.
