🚨 IMPORTANT FIRE SAFETY UPDATE – HENRY’S LAW 🚨

📅 Effective November 1, 2026 – Saskatchewan

The Stoughton–Tecumseh & District Fire Department would like to remind residents and property owners about Henry’s Law, new provincial requirements designed to improve protection against carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

🏠 What does this mean?

Beginning November 1, 2026, every residential suite in a multi-unit residential building must have a carbon monoxide alarm installed, regardless of the suite’s location or the age of the building.

This includes:
🔹 Apartments
🔹 Condominiums
🔹 Homes with secondary suites
🔹 Other residential buildings containing multiple suites

⚠️ Why is this important?

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and poisonous gas that can be deadly. It can be produced by fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces and other equipment.

✅ What should you do?
• Make sure your suite has a working carbon monoxide alarm.
• Test your alarms regularly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
• Replace expired alarms as recommended.
• Have fuel-burning appliances inspected and maintained by qualified professionals.

🏢 Landlords and property owners: Make sure your buildings meet the new requirements before the November 1 deadline.

Carbon monoxide can’t be seen or smelled. A working alarm can provide the early warning you and your family need.

Protect your home. Protect your family. Don’t wait until November 1!

Carbon monoxide and smoke alarms must be installed in all residential buildings and all buildings with overnight sleeping accommodations in Saskatchewan.

🔥 A FULL charge isn’t worth a house fire!

A simple charging habit can put your home and family at risk.

Most smartphones use lithium-ion batteries. When damaged, defective, or overheated, these batteries can enter thermal runaway, potentially causing a fire.

⚠️ Never charge your phone on a bed, sofa, or under a pillow.

⚠️ Avoid charging unattended or while sleeping.

⚠️ Use certified, compatible chargers and charge on a hard, non-combustible surface.

A little precaution can prevent a big disaster. Charge safely and protect your home and family.

Today we did a mock fire drill with the school to make sure their muster plans worked and all the children knew what to do when we showed up coming in with lights and sirens on, it was a success and we want to say thank you to the parents a lot of the children knew what to do if there was a smoke alarm or fire in their house.

🔥 4 WAYS TO EXTINGUISH FIRE

How do firefighters actually put out a fire?

Fire needs four things to keep burning: heat, fuel, oxygen, and a chemical chain reaction. This is called the Fire Tetrahedron.

To stop a fire, we need to remove or interrupt at least one of these.

💧 1. Cooling – Removes heat. Water helps cool burning materials and lowers their temperature.

2. Smothering – Limits oxygen. Covering a small pan fire with a suitable metal lid is one example.

3. Starvation – Removes fuel. Shutting off a gas supply, when safe, can stop the fire from being fed.

4. Chain Reaction Inhibition – Interrupts the chemical reaction that keeps flames burning. Some dry chemical extinguishers work this way.

⚠️ Remember, not every method works for every fire. Using the wrong extinguishing agent can make things worse.

Firefighting isn’t just about spraying water. It’s about understanding what keeps a fire burning and knowing how to stop it.

Stay safe and keep learning! 🚒

🔥 UNPLUG CHARGERS WHEN NOT IN USE

Leaving a charger plugged in may seem harmless, but damaged, defective, counterfeit, or poorly made chargers can overheat or develop electrical faults that may lead to a fire.

A few simple habits can reduce the risk:

* 🔌 Unplug chargers when you’re finished using them, especially before leaving home for long periods.
* 📱 Use the charger recommended or approved by the device manufacturer.
* ⚠️ Stop using chargers with frayed cables, loose plugs, exposed wires, discoloration, or signs of overheating.
* 🛏️ Never charge devices on beds, pillows, sofas, or underneath clothing where heat can build up.
* 🔥 If a charger or outlet becomes unusually hot, smells like burning plastic, sparks, or makes unusual sounds, stop using it and have the equipment or outlet checked.
* 🚫 Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords.

Remember: Simply being plugged in does not mean a good-quality charger will automatically catch fire. The greater concern is faulty equipment, damaged wiring, overheating, poor-quality products, and improper charging practices.

Small electrical safety habits can prevent a small fault from becoming a house fire. 🔥🚒

Unplug. Inspect. Charge safely.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is commonly produced by malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances like furnaces and water heaters, as well as vehicle exhaust.

Regular maintenance and properly installed CO alarms can reduce the risk and provide early warning when dangerous levels of CO are present.
