Pre-Season Soundness Exams 🐴

With competition season approaching, now is the time to make sure your horse is moving comfortably and performing at their best.

Our pre-season exams focus on careful lameness evaluation and advanced diagnostics to identify subtle issues early. When needed, we can follow up with targeted diagnostics such as nerve blocks, radiographs, and ultrasound to pinpoint the source of discomfort.

From there, we offer a range of evidence-based treatment options including joint therapies, biologics, shockwave, laser, VSMT, and rehabilitation planning to help keep horses comfortable and performing all season long.

Having a tailored plan for the season, early detection and proactive care can make all the difference for a smooth show season.

As the cold winter weather trudges on, here are some important tips and reminders to keep your equine companions safe during extreme weather. ❄️

1. While lots of hay is ideal for horses to eat to keep warm, now is NOT the time to introduce a round bale if they’ve never had access to one before. It may be more work, but keep throwing them their normal hay source, just more frequently.

2. Similarly, if your horse is not used to being in a stall, now is NOT the time. The stress of a major change and the decreased activity can be risk factors for colic. Be sure they have access to shelter, hay, and drinkable water but let them move around if they choose to do so.

3. Horses that are thin, older, or fully body clipped are those most at risk in extreme weather.

4. Well-fitting blankets are great but be sure that horses do not get sweaty under them, or that the blankets don’t soak through if snow or rain covered. Wet, cold and covered is worse than dry, cold and naked.

5. Some of the highest risk times are when the temperatures hover right around freezing, as that can result in sleet/freezing rain/ice that can make horses wet and therefore colder. Slippery footing is a concern, too.

6. If using electric water heaters, be sure they are functioning and not shocking horses. Take your gloves off and stick your hand in the water (briefly!!!) to double check.

7. Entice your horses to consume extra water by flavoring a bucket, adding electrolytes to their meals, or soaking their meals in warm water.

8. The tips of your horses' ears can be at risk for frostbite. Putting on a WATERPROOF ear bonnet or other WATERPROOF ear covering can protect them from wind chills.

If you have any questions or concerns about keeping your horses safe this winter, contact your veterinarian for advice.

Laser Therapy Treatments with Henderson Equine Services.

As it gets colder outside, muscles tighten, circulation slows , and both young and senior horses can start to feel a little stiffer than usual. Winter can be tough on every horse — but laser therapy can help make your horse more comfortable and recover faster.

How Laser Therapy Treatments Can Help:
• Improves blood flow: Increased circulation keeps muscles warm and flexible, even on frosty days.
• Eases stiffness & soreness: Ideal for horses who get tight in the cold or take longer to warm up.
• Supports old injuries: Winter often aggravates past issues; laser therapy helps maintain comfort and mobility.
• Promotes faster wound healing: Laser therapy supports healthy tissue repair, helping wounds close and recover more efficiently.
• Reduces inflammation: Especially beneficial for muscle strains and tendon injuries, helping reduce swelling and support smoother recovery.
• Enhances overall wellness: Regular treatments can support relaxation, better movement and a smoother warmup—no matter your horse’s age or workload.

At Henderson Equine Services, we offer Laser Treatment Packages to help your horse feel their best year round.

Atrial Fibrillation in Horses and What Owners Should Know.

At Henderson Equine Services, we want to keep you informed about Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) — the most common cardiac rhythm abnormality in horses. AFib can affect horses of any age or fitness level and early recognition makes all the difference.

Possible Signs:
• Reduced performance or fatigue
• Exercise intolerance
• “Fluttering” or irregular heartbeat
• Rapid breathing after work
• Sometimes no obvious signs at all

How We Diagnose:
A full physical exam, cardiac auscultation, and additional testing if needed.

Treatment:
Cardioversion (medical or electrical) is the gold standard. We offer in-house medical cardioversion to safely restore a normal rhythm.

If you’ve noticed changes in your horse’s performance or heart rhythm, feel free to call us at 519-318-3274 to help guide next steps.

🩺 Winter Reminder: Keep Foals Protected with Timely Vaccinations

Winter can be hard on a young horse’s immune system, making it even more important to stay on top of foal vaccination schedules. Core vaccines typically begin around 4–6 months of age, depending on the mare’s vaccination status, and will help to build a strong protection as your foal grows.

Core vaccines include:

Tetanus

Eastern/Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE/WEE)

West Nile Virus

Rabies

Booster vaccines are given at the proper intervals is essential for full immunity—especially for young horses.

Need help reviewing your foal’s vaccination plan or booking an appointment?

Time to start your Broodmares Under Lights.

As breeding season approaches, we would like to remind clients that now is the time to begin artificial lighting programs for broodmares. Mares are seasonally polyestrous, meaning their reproductive cycles are influenced by daylight length. Increasing light exposure helps stimulate earlier, more consistent cycling—an important step for planned spring breeding.

Lighting Guidelines:
Start Date : December 1st ( Start 60–90 days before the desired breeding date.)
Lighting Period: 4:00pm -10:00 pm Daily.
Maintain a consistent 14–16 hours of total light per day. Lights should remain on for 6 hours in the evening, in addition to natural daylight. Use light bright enough to comfortably read a newspaper in the stall.

Check out the Equilume Light mask, this rechargeable Light Mask delivers 15 hours of blue light daily ensuring your horse benefits from consistent light exposure. This option does allow mares to live outside while still receiving the light treatment.

Remember that a healthy pregnancy and a healthy foal depend on the health of the mare prior to conception. For assistance designing a lighting routine or to schedule a complete breeding soundness examination on your mare, please contact Henderson Equine Services at 519-318-3274.
