IRCC will accept up to 10,000 complete applications for sponsorship under the Parents and Grandparents Program this year. Starting on July 28, 2025, and over the course of approximately two weeks, IRCC will send invitations to apply to interested potential sponsors.

Anyone who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020 but has not yet received an invitation to apply is encouraged to check the email account they provided in 2020. They should make sure to check their junk and spam folders.

Due to the number of forms remaining in the pool of interest to sponsor submissions from 2020, IRCC will send invitations to apply to potential sponsors from that pool instead of opening a new interest to sponsor form.

Considering that just a month prior the backlog was at 892,100, this shows a reduction of a noticeable 7.95%.

Coupled with the fact that this marks the third consecutive month the backlog has remained below the 1 million mark, it signals consistent progress in application processing by the IRCC. As of February 28, IRCC has 2,029,400 applications, in total, in its inventory. Of these, 1,208,200 applications were processed within service standards.

For further context, here is a look at the overall immigration backlog as of the final day of each of the last six months:

Express Entry candidates will no longer receive extra Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points for having a valid job offer, including offers supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

The change took place in the Ministerial Instructions effective March 25, 2025.

Prior to this change, Express Entry candidates could receive an additional 50 or 200 CRS points for arranged employment, making them much more likely to receive an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residence (PR) through Express Entry.

This change affects the CRS scores of all candidates in the Express Entry pool who previously had additional points for arranged employment.

Candidates who have already received ITAs or who have PR applications in progress are not affected.

If your Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is expiring soon, you can stay and work in Canada by getting a Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) work permit.

TFWP work permits are employer-specific or closed work permits. That means that candidates who have them are only authorized to work in Canada but only for the employer specified on the permit.

TFWP work permits can be issued for nearly any occupation and industry (with a few exceptions listed below), and for foreign nationals of any nationality. These work permits usually take the most amount of work to get but are also the least specific to qualify for, making them one of the best options those looking to continue working in Canada.

To get a TFWP work permit, your employer must first get a positive or neutral Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) through Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC).

For 2025, the focus of the federal economic class draws will be to invite candidates with experience working in Canada (Canadian Experience Class) to apply for permanent residence.

strong French language skills, or
work experience in the following fields:
health care and social services, such as family physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists and chiropractors
trades, such as carpenters, plumbers and contractors
