Anxiety is an invisible invader:
It can sneak up on you without warning and it can be debilitating. Others can’t see it but you certainly feel it. It can freeze your ability to think rationally and the triggers can send an “alert” which often causes you to “fight, flight or freeze”.

The triggers may seem odd, ridiculous, and unreasonable to others but to the person experiencing the anxiety, they are real.

* this will not last forever
* focus on breathing
* you have loved ones who want to help & support you

To better support individual needs, we must ensure the environment is enriched with all the possible supports they need to flourish. While there are many universal supports & strategies, they must be altered to meet the child’s specific needs.

A visual support is a rather vague: but when we look at the child’s strength, meet them where they are and slightly raise the bar, we give them the opportunity to learn, grow & succeed.

Such amazing news … with the waitlist for a provincial Autism assessment ranging from 18 months & 3 years, many parents have resorted to paying for a private assessment out of pocket. This is an expensive avenue that so many families have had to resort to.

An early assessment/ diagnosis is critical to ensuring all supports & resources are available to the child & family. Without a diagnosis, the child has limited resources available to them.

Thanks to Variety Club, the fees for a private assessment can now be paid through Variety Club, reducing the financial burden that so many families have had to endure just so their child can be assessed in a timely manner.

It’s Variety Club Week…now would be the perfect time to donate to this incredibly amazing organization!

🌸 The best way to end my summer was with this incredible group of amazing girls in the Girls Power Hour, a friendship group.

For the past four days, I had the pleasure of working with some very special & courageous young ladies who came to the Girls Power Hour to learn about building friendships and having good communication skills.

We allowed incidental pro-social learning opportunities to occur while we designed t-shirts, beaded friendship bracelets, listened to music and played games…their smiles & laughter melted my heart ❤️

It’s not easy going to new places and/or meeting new people, but these girls showed up every morning with big smiles and open hearts.

🌸 Acceptance
🌸 Respect
🌸 Patience
🌸 Resilience

Love what you do and do what you love ❤️

One my favourite “Superflex Unsung Hero’s”

It’s not me who deserves the praises, it’s these kiddos with ASD who show up every single day, trying to navigate the depths of the complicated social world around them.
Bravo to each & every child, youth & adult with ASD…you make the world a better place.

Open your heart and create space to be patient, empathic, supportive, & nurturing and you will be amazed at the outcome.

Day 3 of the SuperFlex Social Thinking Camp with the 9-10 yr old group.

What we learned is mini golf is not always fun & games:
* Waiting your turn is hard,
* Letting others have a second chance is not always “fair”,
* Controlling your anger, especially in public/social places takes A LOT of coaching,
* Respecting personal space is easily forgotten, and
* Being a FLEXIBLE Thinker takes A LOT of practice with the right amount of patience, compassion and understanding from others.

We use leisure & recreational activities as a learning opportunity to practice FUNDAMENTAL SOCIAL THINKING SKILLS that are essential to being sociable.

I am grateful for the opportunities these kiddos teach me!

Covid restrictions had us pivoting again this summer and thinking outside the box…

But it did not stop us from hosting Superflex Thinking Camps. I currently have 2 groups running and it is magical watching these kiddos learning through direct instruction, incidental opportunities and social interactions.

I like to keep my groups small & intimate to ensure I can provide direct instruction to each participant.

Social development starts with basic play skills and evolves into fundamental social thinking skills through the use direct support & teaching as well as the use Positive Behaviour Supports.

I’m so proud of the kiddos in my camp this week, as they are becoming “Superflex Thinkers”.
