This Disability Employment Month, we recognize the important contributions people with disabilities make to workplaces, businesses, and communities across Surrey & White Rock.

Inclusive employment strengthens our workforce, expands opportunity, and helps build workplaces where more people can contribute, grow, and succeed.

ICYMI: Last week we wrapped up our Summer Sizzle Networking Series on the patio of Milestones Southpoint!

Our final Sizzle of the summer brought Surrey and White Rock’s business community together for an evening of conversation, new connections and relationship building in a relaxed patio setting.

Thank you to Milestones Southpoint for hosting us and to everyone who joined us throughout this year’s Summer Sizzle series. These events are all about creating more opportunities for local business leaders to connect, strengthen their networks and build relationships across our community.

Last month, Surrey & White Rock Board of Trade CEO Joslyn Young travelled to China during Premier David Eby’s B.C. trade mission, visiting Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong to strengthen international business relationships and explore new opportunities for Surrey & White Rock businesses.

The visit came at an important time as Canadian businesses look to diversify markets, strengthen supply chains and build relationships beyond traditional trading partners.

Throughout the trip, Joslyn connected with Premier Eby and members of the B.C. delegation, attended business receptions with provincial, tourism and economic development leaders, and participated in meetings focused on trade, investment, tourism and international market opportunities.

Her visit also included meetings with the BC Guangdong Business Council and tours of manufacturing operations, providing firsthand insight into international production, supply chains and opportunities for future collaboration.

This work supports SWRBOT’s broader focus on helping businesses expand into new markets, attract investment and build stronger international connections.

A special thank you to SWRBOT Board Director Li Gong, Owner of Van Casa Building Supplies, for her generosity, hospitality and connections throughout the visit. Her support helped facilitate valuable introductions and relationship building in China.

In February 2027, SWRBOT will continue building international connections for our members by leading a Trade Mission to India.

A big thank you to Sydney Marshall, our summer intern, for being part of the SWRBOT team this summer!

Sydney is heading into her second year of the Bachelor of Commerce program at UBC and joined us with an interest in advocacy, policy and how both connect with the business community.

Over the summer, she had the chance to see that work firsthand through member relations, advocacy and events, including engagements with Minister Sean Fraser, Minister Steven MacKinnon, Minister Kelly Greene, Minister Jagrup Brar and Parliamentary Secretaries Amna Shah and Garry Begg.

Sydney, thank you for all of your help this summer. We’ve enjoyed having you on the team and wish you all the best as you head back to UBC!

ICYMI: SWRBOT hosted an Emergency Management & Climate Readiness Roundtable with the Honourable Kelly Greene, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, bringing together business, government and public safety leaders for an important conversation on preparedness, resilience and business continuity.

The roundtable included MLA Gerry Begg and MLA Amna Shah, the Mayors of Surrey, Merritt, Chilliwack and Hope, fire chiefs from Surrey and White Rock, and other community leaders. The discussion explored the Province’s role in emergency response, practical steps businesses can take to strengthen preparedness, and strategies to maintain workforce capacity and operations during large scale disruptions.

The roundtable also came alongside a significant announcement for Surrey: five flood mitigation projects supported by the Province, federal government and City of Surrey, including more than $14 million in provincial funding. These investments will help protect residents, businesses, farmland and key transportation corridors while strengthening Surrey’s long term resilience.

SWRBOT continues to bring business, government and community leaders together around the issues that matter most, creating opportunities for direct dialogue and practical action.
Thank you to Minister Greene for her time and for engaging directly with Surrey & White Rock’s business and community leaders.

This week’s Member Spotlight features The Chopped Leaf and local franchisee Jas Rai, who owns three locations across Surrey and Langley, including Morgan Crossing, King George, and Langley Central.

Jas first discovered Chopped Leaf as a customer and was drawn to its fresh, made to order food and the idea that choosing healthier options should never feel like settling. That experience eventually led her to become a franchisee and grow the brand locally.

For Jas, doing business in Surrey means being part of a diverse and growing community where strong local relationships matter. Across her Chopped Leaf locations, that means serving fresh food with friendly service while staying connected through local schools, sports teams, workplace lunches, community events, and initiatives such as Run Surrey Run. Chopped Leaf is also growing its catering and office lunch programs, creating more ways to serve local businesses, teams, and organizations.

Beyond Chopped Leaf, Jas is the founder of Rise & Thrive & Thrive, a coaching and mastermind community supporting women entrepreneurs. She also serves as a Make A Wish BC & Yukon Women for Wishes Ambassador, helping raise awareness and support for children facing critical illnesses.

That same focus on connection and community is at the heart of how Jas continues to grow Chopped Leaf and serve the people and businesses around her.
