Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting the potential for severe thunderstorms in our area later tonight and into tomorrow, with the possibility of tornado formation Thursday afternoon.

While it's too early to know exactly what conditions Swift Current may experience, now is a good time to take a few simple precautions:

• Secure or bring inside loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, umbrellas, and trampolines
• If possible, move vehicles under cover in case of hail
• Clear leaves and debris from nearby storm drains where it is safe to do so
• Charge mobile devices and have flashlights ready in case of a power outage.
• Monitor local forecasts and be prepared to adjust your plans if conditions change

City crews, including Public Works and Light & Power, are prepared to respond if needed. As we continue cleaning up from Sunday's storm, we appreciate your patience and cooperation.

If severe weather does develop, please avoid unnecessary travel and give emergency responders and City crews the space they need to work safely.

But the secret is... the crew has even more fun than the kids! 🥰 Let’s be honest, we love showing off the trucks just as much as everyone loves seeing them. ❤️Thank you for bringing so much energy and joy to the station! You're welcome back anytime.

Yesterday we proudly recognized three members of the Swift Current Fire Department for their years of dedicated service to our community. Their commitment, professionalism, and sacrifice help keep Swift Current safe every day.

Kent Silbernagel - C Platoon Captain - 20 years of service
Joel Rogers - Auxiliary Firefighter - 10 years of service

✔️ Build or refresh your emergency kit (water, flashlight, batteries, first aid)
✔️ Stay informed with weather alerts and local updates
✔️ Make a family plan so everyone knows what to do

Being prepared isn’t complicated, but it can make all the difference. Stay safe and ready this storm season!

This week is emergency preparedness week! Our weather, our landscape, and the world around us is unpredictable, but what you can do to help yourself is be prepared

DAY 3: Build Your 72-Hour Kit 🎒
Public Safety Canada is clear: every household should be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours. As this week on the prairies tells a very real story, help may be delayed in arriving due to severe flooding and impassible roads, or for a host of various other reasons.

Day 2 of Emergency Preparedness Week! 📋

Quick question: Do you and your family know what to do if there was imminent danger of a tornado going through Swift Current?

If you hesitated — this post is for you.

A household emergency plan doesn't have to be complicated. It just has to exist. In Swift Current, your should plan for:

🌪️ Where do you shelter for a tornado? (Lowest floor, interior room, away from windows)
🚗 When it is safe to travel, what are your TWO evacuation routes out of the city?
📞 Do you have an out of city or out of province contact?
🏫 What's your protocol if the kids are at school when an emergency hits?
🏠 Where is your family meeting spot if you can't reach each other?
🔒 Do you know how to shut of your house gas and water?

Write it. Print it. Put it on the fridge. Practice it once a year.
