February is Heart Month

When someone's heart stops, every second counts. Brain damage can begin in just 4 to 6 minutes without oxygen-rich blood flow. Emergency services, even at their fastest, often can't get there in time. That gap between collapse and professional help? That's where ordinary people become lifesavers.

You don't need scrubs or a stethoscope. You need two hands for CPR and access to an AED. The chest compressions keep blood moving. The defibrillator does what its name suggests: it stops the chaos and gives the heart a chance to reset.

Most cardiac arrests don't happen in ERs. They happen in living rooms, office lunchrooms, and hockey arenas. The person closest to the emergency is almost never a paramedic. It's a coworker, a neighbour, a stranger who happened to be nearby.

This Heart Month, the question isn't just "how's your heart?" It's "could you help someone else's?"

Training takes hours, not years. And that small investment of time? It sits with you forever, ready if you ever need it.
