"My Fridge and Freezer are not working at all!"

or,

"All of my groceries went bad while I was out of town on vacation!"

or,

"The freezer quit yesterday, and the fridge doesn't seem to be cooling well now either!

LG, Samsung, Hisense, Danby, Haier, are the brands of refrigerators and fridges that fill up my service request inbox like no other from early May to late October. They usually completely fail within hours with no advanced warning. Canadian summer heat is harsh on these machines.

They are impressive machines... Shiny, lots of options, they are reasonably priced to buy, and will always need at least 1 compressor and complete sealed system rebuild every 2-5 years.

Clients tell me, "I took the interior panel off to look at fan, but no freezing is happening with the evaporator. I vacuumed and cleaned out condenser area, it's all clean. Unplugged and let it sit for more than 24 hours, plugged it back in... still nothing... Help!"

And here is the part that gets my clients so angry. I tell them bluntly, "This is normal with these build designs of refrigerators."

"Normal??? - What!!!", they sputter, "I spent $1500-$5000 for this thing. It's top of the line! I saved up for a long time for this machine!!"

Usually, I have a dozen people minimum call me a week on these fridges. But people keep buying them for some reason.

It's actually best to call the manufacturer directly. They have a 1-10 plus year warranty on their fridges. Just give them a call, and they will fix it for free. The manufacturer usually has a few technicians based out of Calgary or Edmonton who is paid by the manufacture to do the work for free to the client.

"Well I tried to call them, but they can't come to assess it for 2-4 weeks, What do I do?

It's best to get prepared to have another way to keep your food cold, even if it's just a couple of coolers in the backyard.

These units usually need to have the compressor replaced and the cooling system rebuilt. You need someone who is set up to do sealed system work. Usually costs $750-$2500+ outside of warranty for these types of repairs. And people rarely fix them outside of warranty.

I actually do not recommend repairing these units outside of warranty due to engineering issues and several US and CAN lawsuits on them. Especially since the repairs that are done typically have an 80% repair failure rate within 6 - 36 months. Additionally, the manufacture typically only warranties the parts for 90 days.

I don't have a brand preference, but... Try something that is designed and built in the USA or Europe. They rarely have compressor issues.

Try buying the refrigerator from a dealer that has the service technicians to do the warranty work when it breaks. Most appliance retailers do not have any appliance service technicians. They cannot afford to pay for the manufacturer or consumer appliance liabilities. And if they do, it is a cost of doing business.

Otherwise, just buy a new unit every time it breaks. Reasonably priced items are built cheap, and perhaps your not really buying them, ... You are just "renting" them before they get crushed and recycled once its out of warranty anyways...

Clients often demand, "Why won't you answer the phone when I call you?"

"I Need Help Now! ... Yesterday! ... Leaving a Message is Not Acceptable!"

People are so desperate to have a machine to just work right now and immediately. Unplanned maintenance shutdowns are not acceptable for many people whom reach out to me in this way.

The business phone is constantly buzzing away in my toolbag. All day long. Often from before dawn, to after dusk... Why? Because appliances don't often break during business hours. They fail when they are working for you, when you are at home, outside of business hours.

Perhaps this is a great way to introduce you to my mobile office space. This little pocket right here. On the toolbag. No receptionist to be found... My closest digital assistant available to me is connected to the texting inbox, right next to the voicemail inbox, and few apps over there is the email inbox...

I have learned over the years, that people only want to have a conversation in a meaningful way with the technician... Not somebody talking as a representative for the technician, not some version of AI technology that fails to artificially replicate the technical answers a client is looking for...

The technician... is well, ... busy... usually fixing something, or driving to the next service appointment. When we are in someone's home, We are working on that persons service request. So the office apps of my business phone are in "leave a message mode"...

People pay me to fix their appliance while in their home, It's rude to my clients to answer other clients' service requests and use someone else's laundry room or kitchen as my office space.

We are unable to answer the phone most of the time! See a phone call to a client takes about 5-15 minutes, that means I can only talk to 4 - 10 people an hour if I dedicate that entire hour to being a receptionist.

But then I cannot be fixing something and honoring our clients genuine request to help them get their household back to normal...

However, in between service appointments, when I find a decent place to park, I can send off a bunch of text messages quickly and let my existing and future clients get back to me on their schedule, when Its more convenient to them, and to you.

I will get back to you as soon as humanly possible! Why? I genuinely lack the ability to be a piece of technology, an app, or a robot. I'm quite simply just a human... For Real!

Clients often ask how we received our training, as they are grateful for the tips and advice that is offered when addressing different issues.

People often bring up terms like "professional, expert, specialized, and a smart intellect," when having a conversation. Honestly we are flattered, but from decades performing a wide range of services within the appliance repair service scope, we are actually in a constant state of education.

Appliances are not made like they were used to. They have evolved from loud, clunky, noisy, and rough mechanical machines into exceptionally quiet, smooth, and elegant marvels packed with all of the newest technology available.

We are constantly humbled as every year the manufacturers design a new way that a machine accomplishes a task. Mechanical switches have been replaced by sensors, touchpads have replaced k***s and buttons, and the traditional analog AC power supply has been modified to run complex DC digital systems.

Trade school at a university or college with a journeyman ticket, was the starting point of understanding basic systems, but does not make us automatically a "professional, expert, specialized, and a smart intellect."

With the evolution of the build designs we continue to figure out how things work as the relevance of older systems become obsolete. The brand new units being bought today, have never been worked on before. Manufacturers are quite effective at finding new ways for a machine to break down.

The underlying message we often receive from our clients is a genuine request to help them get their household back to normal... and often when its something so new, we honestly have no idea how to help them initially. So we go back to basic theory, and after some time pouring over the technical details, service manuals, and manufacture training updates, we will build a repair plan.

And just like that a solution is produced, and we go on to figure out the next new problem to solve. The newest greatest modern shiny machine that has yet to break down is on its way to meet our tool bag of screwdrivers, wrenches, and meters.

People have so much enthusiasm to get that appliance fixed right away! A few text messages later and then people give the best of reasons not to continue with repairs... Enjoy!

I tried to put the washer on its side to find the leak, but now it leaks even more! I think I'm just going to buy a new one.

Okay, I am going to think about it and let you know. Thank you.

I got the part, and my neighbor installed it. Works great! Thanks anyway!

We’ve decided to go new. Thanks for all your help!

If it's going to cost more than $50, I'm just just going to buy new.

Ok, leave this with me, and I’ll talk it over with my husband. Thank you for all your time.

Thanks so much for the info… but my wife fixed it!

Ok, thanks. I’m just discussing this with my husband.

Ok. I'm going to check to see if we still have the remaining warranty. Paying for repairs is a bummer.

I am thinking of buying a new one now. Thank you for your time.

I bought it just last year and my warranty just expired not long ago. I'm going to see if the store will take it back. I appreciate your time and will reach out when I figure out what I should do.

What do you mean you don't fix small appliances! This is a premium toaster!

Okay, thanks for the info. I will chat with my husband and let you know if we decide to attempt to fix this one or maybe just time for something new. Appreciate the quick response and transparency on costs.

Thanks for your time. But I think I may try and fix myself. With my vacation coming up, I'm not sure I can afford too much. Again, thanks for your time.

I'm sure we will need future repairs and will definitely keep you in mind.

Thank you so much for the info. If we change our mind, we will reach out for a repair. Take care.

I think we will wait until after we get back from vacation. Thank you.

Well, it's under warranty... the manufacturer said they would fix it for free. Why can't you fix it for free, too?

I think I will check a few things before proceeding, 2-10 days is a long time for a part to arrive.

It has died. We bought a new one. Delivery tomorrow! But thanks all the same.

Please just tell me the service fee. I've been considering if I should repair it or just replace it. The cost for repairs will help me with that decision. Thanks.

But a TV is an appliance. If it doesn't get fixed, I won't be able to play my video games.

Hey! Apologies! I was able to get it fixed on my own with some colorful language and persistence. Thank you for returning my call, and I’ll bother you again on my next adventure:) Thank you again!

Thank you for getting back to me. I feel like my wife will buy a new machine and start with a fresh warranty coverage.

Thank you so much, and you'll be on my contact list if I have trouble.

Appliance replacement vs service and repair. The best option for you is well, ... up to you!

Often a new sales receipt is the easiest way to maintain your appliances! Just rip out the old one, put the new one in place, and plug it in and go!

No endless hours of homeowner internet research for disassembly and assessment needed, no parts to order, no technician needed to hire when its just too complicated to figure it out on your own.

Maybe it is just best to buy a new appliance. Spend the big bucks, or finance it, buy the extended warranty insurance plan, and be comfortable with a 5 year all breakdowns fixed for free plan.

There are so many options to buy from. Dedicated appliance stores, hardware stores, and exclusive membership stores. So many different salespeople and delivery options. It's shiny, its new, it has those new features, and its a whole new great experience!

Months and then years go by, maybe its been fixed once or twice and the machine has just been such a great help to the household overall.

Now the quick fixes that the warranty insurance plan fixed for free is over. Those big bucks to solve all your problems before has lost its appeal, it's old, dirty, overworked way to many times, and now its broken from excessively heavy use and now it needs real maintenance.

We have alot of clients whom value the older items and spend a considerable amount of money on them, and are quite happy with the repairs.

Those clients believe that a 5 to 15 year old machine, although the repairs are costly, the machine will work for another 5-10 years.

Maintenance tips are offered, recommendations of not overworking the unit are given and the machine works again, often just as well as before. Trust with the machine has been restored.

Potential clients often call in just to ask us if it is worth fixing. Every home has different priorities and needs. It all depends on what the clients value. Either answer is the correct one from their point of view.

"I have an emergency! ... My dishwasher won't wash the dishes!" is a common voicemail I get all the time.

I understand my clients have very busy lives. Every moment is optimized for maximum efficiency, so that they can do the things that are most important to them.

We have learned that a broken dishwasher impacts the entire household dynamics.

Someone, or multiple people have to change their daily routine, doing this work by hand.

Spending an hour, or two, or more washing and drying dishes is a huge burden for many households.

I call them back, I schedule in the assessment, find out what it needs, and I tell them an estimated arrival time of the part. Often its 2-10 days.

"I don't have time to wait for the part!" You can just feel the frustration from them. "I'm just going to buy a new one!", ... " When can you come back and install the new dishwasher?"

And just like that, we get the new dishwasher installed, and my client's home is back to normal. They can make a mess in the kitchen and not worry about the cleanup consequences.

I often find it amazing what qualifies as an emergency these days...

I believe there are some really big hardships in the homes of everyday people these days...

"My washer isn't draining, and my bathtub is full of soaked laundry," is a common initial statement I receive on my voicemail. "I tried resetting it but it just decides when it wants to work!"

You can just feel the frustration of a person whom hasn't been able to do their laundry for several weeks now. They are so desperate for the machine to just work.

I call them back, I schedule in the repair, and discuss payment terms. The client agrees to the repairs, and shortly after the washer is working again. The client is so grateful to have a working washer.

The underlying message we often receive from our clients is a genuine request to help them get their household back to normal...

The invoice gets sent out, and a week goes by with no payment. I reach out to inquire, and I get this response. "I'm just a tenant, and my landlord is going to pay you, ... Here is their name and phone number", ... and then the client disappears... "Ghosted"

We get alot of people who call me to fix appliances, only to find after the repair is done, they don't own the home, and they tell us to contact the landlord to pay.

Here is the real truth. The landlord is not obligated to pay for the repairs as they did not reach out for the repairs to be performed.

We never get paid in these situations. Most landlords will not honor repairs unknowingly requested by their tenants. And its completely reasonable that they do not pay.

Theft of service is a real issue, it hurts. Putting a lien on a property, or taking people to court takes our time away from helping others in need. Tradespersons have their place in providing incredibly quick and quality essential services... But that costs Money...

As a small independent service shop, we do not have the resources determine the credit worthiness of people who are going to ask us to do work for them.

They are going to: "Ask you to - Lend Them Money, By Doing Work" - and you will be in a position of - "Hoping They Pay after Said Work is Done."

We have now implemented prepayment of repairs. Because "Hope" does not work.

At first it was hard to make this change, however, it filters out 80% of my client relations issues right at the beginning of our contact with them. A potential unaccountable client that will "ghost" us immediately when we the state the repair must be prepaid, is now the preference.

"They came with the house we bought since we moved in, just looking at upgrading, works great, must pickup and bring help to move them."

I'm not sure how best to describe my hope for people to be careful when comparing these cheap used appliances from random individuals to the new stuff... Perhaps I'll share some thoughts...

"It's just so expensive to buy new" is what people say to me after they bought a "good working condition" washer and dryer off of the online Marketplace, just to find it's not exactly working properly.

People whom like to compare apples and oranges like is some sort of "philosophical truth", are not a fan when I tell them these very real truths.

Terms like, ... "Everything works but the spin cycle", or ... "It runs great, just a little noise", or the phrase, "We've upgraded, and don't need these anymore" is common to read.

It seems like every day we are getting phone calls and text messages from folks whom have spent from as little as $0 up to well over $1000 for a used washer and dryer that looks "Mint" from someone on the local online classifieds, that just doesn't work, or has caused serious damage to their home.

It could be anywhere from "I plugged it in and nothing works", to "It got partway through the cycle and just stopped" or all the way to the more serious stuff like, "it started making burning smells and I could hear sparks before the breaker popped" or "It just flooded the main floor of my house!"

Often, there is no recourse for people whom have been caught up in buying essentially someone else's problems... and yes its unfair, but this is such a common issue. People are so desperate to have a machine to just work.

People will give away or sell off their worn out stuff, and use the funds towards offsetting the cost of buying new, just like many other things you find online...

Buyer Beware... Be careful of all the hidden issues with buying used. No warranty, no financial recourse, and no one that can be held accountable.

Experience is the best teacher. You get the test first, and the lesson afterwards...

I'm not sure how best to describe my hope for people to be careful when tackling their own "free" appliance repairs... Perhaps I'll share some thoughts...

The underlying message we often receive from our clients is a genuine request to help them get their household back to normal...

Lately and now its a daily issue where we have people who are now calling me as if we are their free, unpaid direct tech support for an issue. Often it's people that have gotten their "AI Chat Degree" in their specific appliance issue after their “google” or “youtube” certified enthusiasm failed them.

All of that free information, using up your valuable free time... So desperate for the machine to just work. People value the appliance that does free mechanical work for them every single day, its an essential service.

Some diy solutions will create more problems... something broke when you tried to take it apart, that cheap dollar store part that was $20 on the internet caused a flood or a fire, and now your house is damaged, and you have to call up your insurance company for a costly claim...

We have had an increase in service requests from insurance companies call us to do an assessment when an appliance damaged a person's home, when the homeowner "fixed" the appliance themselves. I never know what I'm going to find, but I do see alot of failed universal parts especially when it comes to leaking issues. A twenty dollar part is not worth a twenty thousand dollar home insurance claim...

But if you are looking to hire a seasoned tech ...

Tradespersons have their place in providing incredibly quick and quality essential services. Hiring a seasoned technician whom already has those experiences, might be a good option... But that costs Money...

Serving many communities with a knowledgeable, dependable, reliable, and communication-oriented business mindset is difficult to do these days. With so many different aspects of the industry working together with different interests is incredibly complex. All the people, services, and just general business expenses you need to pay for just to open the door to clients is astronomically expensive.

People whom like to compare apples and oranges like is some sort of "philosophical truth", are not a fan when I tell them these very real truths.

People tell me they understand. They thank me for my honesty and integrity. They say they will keep my business card for future possibilities... and then they go right back to the internet...

And if it doesn't work out, they just, wait for it, ... "Buy a new one!"

At the end of the day though, accessing other people’s resources or skill sets is expensive. It's not like "human labor" can be just credited "back in time" and put back on the shelf, to be used "next time." Labor like time is linear, it's not something that can be reversed...

These new internet technologies have given people hope that it can be fixed for free...

Youtube, Google, and Artificial Intelligence can help some folks and handyman servicers fix their appliances when they can't figure it out on their own... sometimes...
