We are on the last day of March and looking into April, most would agree that the prospects for the next month are certainly different today than it was a couple of months ago.

We are currently seeing a lot of disruption to saw mills and primary producers as they manage the safety of their staff amongst these difficult times. With that said, most mills are still producing material to capacity and we expect to see a continued buildup of material as takeaway has certainly fallen off and supply continues to grow.

Internally, we have spent a good deal of time assessing how coronavirus is affecting not only the global market but specifically the lumber market as a whole and regionally.

Front and centre in the marketplace is the coronavirus and the effect it is having on global markets.

With that said, the lumber market is not immune. We are seeing a great deal of uncertainty from the customer base, all the way through the supply chain, from the mills right down to the end-users.

There have been some strong and positive expectations about the building season and the excitement to start taking advantage of the upcoming activity.

With that said, we are in a tight spot as prices have appreciated significantly across all sectors of the market over the past several weeks.

The lumber market had a lot to digest last week after the softwood duties announcement.

Many questions were raised that caused much speculation about how the market would react to the news both in the short term and with respect to this August’s final determination.

There was a notable announcement made by the Department of Commerce regarding the countervailing duty and anti-dumping duty preliminary findings released on February, 3rd.

This certainly adds another level of confusion to a market that is already struggling to find direction.

The WRLA Buying Show last week had many of the retail consumers in the prairie markets focusing on their business for the upcoming season.

Along with the show, we saw a moderate amount of follow-through in activity from last week. The market is still seemingly cautious toward any substantial purchasing.

Better than expected numbers on US housing starts seemed to get the market rolling last week and mills reported very strong activity across most product lines. This gave a shot to the market, with solid activity on the US side and the Canadian market followed suit.

The weather pattern that gripped most of the interior BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in record-breaking cold temperatures has abated.
