Presented collaboratively by the Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Sylvan Lake, Community Business Month is a month-long celebration of the businesses, entrepreneurs and organizations that help make Sylvan Lake area a thriving place to live, work and invest.

Building on the spirit of Small Business Week, we wanted to create more opportunities throughout October to bring our business and community together. To celebrate local success, make connections, learn something new, have meaningful conversations and continue building a strong business community here in Sylvan Lake.

Throughout the month, you’ll find business recognition, professional development, networking, local connections and opportunities to engage with community leaders. Whether you own a business, work for one, support local, or simply want to be more connected to what’s happening in our community, there’s a way to take part.

We are so proud of our work on this project! It really does take a team 💜🥰

We at CFCA are so honoured to have been awarded a Community Economic Development Award at the Community Futures Network of Alberta 2026 Symposium and awards gala for the Launch Pad initiative.

This was never simply an online learning platform. It was a shared response to a real challenge: rural entrepreneurs need practical, accessible business training that works regardless of where they live, how they learn or when they are able to participate.

Eighteen Community Futures offices, more than 50 staff members and approximately 50 business clients contributed their knowledge, experience and honest feedback to its development. Together, we created something that now serves entrepreneurs across 27 Community Futures regions and 481 Alberta municipalities, with more than 1,646 module completions to date.

Launch Pad demonstrates what the Community Futures network does exceptionally well: we identify a need locally, bring the right people together, share what we know and build something that creates value far beyond any one office.

Thank you to CFNA for this recognition, we share this honour with every office and individual who contributed to turning an ambitious idea into a lasting provincial resource.

Another fabulous morning on the lake! Thanks to the amazing volunteers and event organizers. I love being on the water and helping 250 swimmers stay safe and do what they did not think was possible.

They call me Coach Cathy…. It is part of who I am and what I bring to the table…. Every year I get to play as the Head Coach for the Woody's Triathlon swim training. Today, I did a presentation on Project Managing your Innovation for Technology Alberta. Here are a few take aways from the session….

One of the strongest takeaways:
“Scope before cost and timelines.”

Too many projects start with:
How much?
How long?

Instead of:
What are we actually building?
What does success look like?
What is NOT included?
Who needs to be consulted?

By simplifying project management into practical ex*****on principles entrepreneurs can use, the skills & processes to drive innovation environments where ideas evolve quickly.

A few key points included:
• Innovation without structure creates chaos
• Scope creep quietly kills ex*****on
• Stakeholder alignment matters early
• Agile thinking works best when balanced with disciplined decision-making
• Creativity is important but eventually you must “lock it in” to execute

Strong reminder that Alberta’s tech and innovation ecosystem is growing because of collaboration between entrepreneurs, operators, educators, consultants, and industry leaders willing to share real-world experience.
