How and when did you end up lake surfing?

1 year ago when I moved to Toronto

tell us about your first sesh in the lake? 

Bought all the gear from local surf shops, Antonio told me the cove would work the next day so I rented a car and drove there. It was shoulder high,clean waves, probably one of the best sessions and everyone super friendly in and outside the water — good times. 

What are you looking for when you are on your board?
Trying to avoid duck diving in winter, take good waves.

Is lake surfing worth it?
Oui

what is your best advice for a new GreatLakes Kook?
Gear up + Big volume boards compared to your usual boards.

what are you doing during the flat season? other passions?

Camping, Bmx

How and when did you end up lake surfing?
After encountering some good ppl loading boards @ 4am in Toronto, during Nuite Blanche, i was directed to Origin Surf msg board. Got the contacts to pick up a board from there and that was it. Game On.

tell us about your first sesh in the lake?
It was efn cold! Two bus rides to JD in 'Sauga. Changing outside (most likely november), outside the closed washrooms. 3/2, no gloves, mec boots.....not really the best decisions buuut certainly the best outcomes. I fell in love that day.

What are you looking for when you are on your board?
Good rides and the natural world. Birds make good water companions.

Is lake surfing worth it?
Haha...i have such a hard timr with defining the IT in this question but yes..the childlike giddiness surfing brings is priceless and irreplaceable.

what is your best advice for a new GreatLakes Kook?
For a new kook? Depends on their experience level...
For the groms-maybe u dont need such a huge board....smaller is much easier to handle in bigger surf
For the ocean ppls entering out lakes ...maybe try some thicker boards with these ocean shapes everyone uses?

what are you doing during the flat season? other passions?
Starting Seeds/Growing food
&
Ding Dang Gone board Repairs :D 
(Hopefully do some freshwater shapes this winter which Im super excited for.....theres definitely some board evolution lagging here)

How and when did you end up lake surfing?
My good homie Alex Copp made me do it. I borrowed a big foamie and it was Late August 2017 with one of those rare summer winds. The weekend I moved to Toronto!

tell us about your first sesh in the lake?
Woodbine beach was firing with massive 2 footers and I could not have been in worse shape. I’ve been snowboarding and wakeskating for a long time so I figured I’d be great at surfing. NOPE. The next time I went was Station Beach and I tripped on my leash while running down the boardwalk. My 25yr old body glove was never the same after that..

What are you looking for when you are on your board?
Sticks, rocks, garbage bags and fellow kooks

Is lake surfing worth it?
It’s like scratching mosquito bites. Worth it until you bleed and ooze. 

what is your best advice for a new GreatLakes Kook?
 Pee in your wetsuit but only when you’re wearing it. 

what are you doing during the flat season? other passions?
Rollerblading. Snowboarding. Wakeskating. Woodsy stuff. Picking trash out of the natural landscape. Pretending to know stuff about things. I also have a passion for getting slammed into the rocky beach at the lighthouse.

That’s a lot of words. 
I think it means to never be that good of a surfer and always drop in on your dad’s wave. 
This was from a -21 solo day near sandbanks. A guy pulled over and yelled at me to not do that, so like a good Canadian I said sorry... and kept surfing!

How and when did you end up lake surfing?
Moved from Victoria BC to Kincardine, due to my husband's work. I have always wanted to live somewhere that I could surf, just never thought it would be in Ontario and on a lake. Totally worth it! 
I never really surfed before until moving to Ontario, maybe once or twice and dabbled in wake surfing. 

Tell us about your first sesh in the lake?
August 23, 2018 at approx 4pm,  I rented a board from Surfsup in Kincardine, and took a lesson from Tarah Lee Coates (Owner of Surfsup) From that very moment I was hooked and from that very day Tarah and I became Surf Sisters. 🤙

What are you looking for when you are on your board? 
Nothing, I've found it as soon as The Hayden and I hit that water together! Yewwww

Is lake surfing worth it?
Fu**in Eh!!!🤙

what is your best advice for a new GreatLakes Kook?
Set small goals; small victories!! 
Oh and get good gear!

What are you doing during the flat season? other passions?
Wake Surf, Drink beer, Mountain Bike, Run, Pump Iron and pray to the wind gods. Come on high NW please.

How and when did you end up lake surfing?
After a couple ocean sessions in 2010 (Tofino and OBX) the bug was set.  After seeing random dudes surf the lake in my hood and reading all the old forums on Origin I finally just made the plunge a day before a big east was rolling in. Dropped a bunch of $ at Boards Sports for my winter suit and headed up to Mike's (SurfOntario) garage to buy my first surfboard.  
So 2011 was my first year lake surfing.

tell us about your first sesh in the lake?  I got my ass handed to me in my first Abay washing machine session.  

What are you looking for when you are on your board?
I am always on the search for a clean wave.  I will always choose clean over size.  If that means I am logging.  Then I am logging. 

Is lake surfing worth it?  Well its my 10 year anniversary of lake surfing in a month, so I would say so.

what is your best advice for a new GreatLakes Kook? Enjoy the wipeouts as much as the good rides.  If you do this, you will always be having fun.

what are you doing during the flat season? other passions?  Well, 2020 I don't think we have had too much of a flat season.  Chasing children and i also found a new way to kook it, Disk Golf.

How and when did you end up lake surfing?
First lake surfing was in 1998,
On nickel beach- Lake Erie on toe high waves! (Summer) . Drove and explored around Lake Erie and the south side of Lake Huron (my sis lives in a 1st nation neighborhood of Stoney point-Sarnia) so we surf there pretty much every summer, fun baby waves with my little daughters Keana and Nailani !

Tell us about your first sesh in the lake?
First real sessh was definitely a late fall in 2009 at The Cove (The Bluffs). After a long break of over 10 years ( school, work and family) finally I found the Cove on a good day! I was wearing a 3/2 shorty from Canadian tire and was cold AF! But the waves were so good! Was the best day of my life!! I couldn’t believed that we had waves like that here in a lake!

What are you looking for when you are on your board?
I’m always looking for people in The water to chat, laugh and share the blessing. Surfing without friends is like playing soccer or tennis by yourself... sad s**t.... at list it is for me. I grew up surfing in Peru with friends and big crowds in the line up so I’m ok with it, is fun! That’s why I encourage people to surf. Is the best feeling ever!

Is lake surfing worth it?
Totally worth it! There are no bad days in the Great Lakes! I just hate being skunked that’s all!
What is your best advice for a new GreatLakes Kook?
To join a group and ask lots of questions about where to surf that’s suitable, when and safety in the water. We’re always ready to help, I am a kook too!

What are you doing during the flat season? other passions?
Eating like a pig (BBQ) camping, road trips with the fam, skateboarding and Mt biking.
What song/band makes you want to saaaaarf ?
Any from Slayer, full blast driving down the hill at The Bluffs! Watch out squirrels!
Who is Great Lakes Kook?
