Small Business, Big Impact: Northern Business Spotlights

Meet Opal Hair and Beauty

Behind every small business is someone bringing their skills and vision to life. For Melissa Bloomfield, owner and stylist at Opal Hair and Beauty, that means combining her work in hair and beauty with her journey as an Indigenous woman entrepreneur.

After 10 years working on commission at a salon and three years renting a chair, Melissa took an exciting next step: becoming a salon owner. Today, she brings her creativity and styling skills to clients while shaping the future of her own business.

Melissa is participating in Community Futures North Central Development’s Indigenous Women’s Entrepreneur (IWE) Program, which supports Indigenous women as they pursue their business goals. Her journey to business ownership highlights the talent and entrepreneurial potential within our northern communities.

We are proud to celebrate Melissa and Opal Hair and Beauty as part of our Northern Business Spotlights series, recognizing the people turning their goals into local businesses.

Small Business, Big Impact: Northern Business Spotlights

Meet Miskanow Corp.

When technology stops working in Northern Manitoba, help can be hundreds of kilometres away. Justin Levasseur founded Miskanow Corp. in 2023 to help close that gap.

This First Nations-owned technology company provides reliable, practical and responsive IT support to northern businesses, First Nations, organizations and communities. From networks and Wi-Fi to equipment installations, troubleshooting and emergency technical assistance, Miskanow helps keep clients connected and operating.

What makes Miskanow stand out? It is a northern business serving the North. The company understands the distances, challenges and realities of working in Northern Manitoba, and focuses on dependable service and lasting relationships.

For Justin, growing Miskanow also means creating meaningful opportunities for First Nations businesses to participate in the northern economy. Looking ahead, the company hopes to expand its services and partnerships, reach more communities, and create local training and employment opportunities in technology.
