Grief can find you in the most ordinary moments.

You hear a song they would have loved.

Something funny happens and, for a second, you reach for your phone.

You walk past their favourite food at the grocery store.

You have news to share and instinctively think, “I need to tell them.”

Then you remember.

These small moments can carry an enormous amount of emotion because grief isn't only about missing someone's presence.

It can also be missing the conversations, routines, inside jokes, advice, comfort, and everyday connection you shared.

There is no requirement for a moment to be significant for the grief attached to it to feel significant.

Sometimes it's the smallest things that remind us how much someone mattered.

If grief has been difficult to carry on your own, counselling can offer a place to talk about the loss and what life looks like around it now.

Connect with us to learn more or to schedule a consultation.

We are available in-person in Thunder Bay and virtually across Ontario.

We work with individuals, couples, and children.

Appointments are available weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

We’re excited to welcome Nolan Maenpaa, RP (Qualifying) Intern, to Autumnwood Counselling for his practicum!

Nolan is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) Intern completing his Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at the University of Ottawa. He is completing his practicum at Autumnwood Counselling under the supervision of Heather Witiluk, MSW, RSW, PMH-C, CCH.

Nolan has experience supporting individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds and with a range of mental health concerns. He is especially interested in working with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, as well as dads experiencing the unique challenges that can come with fatherhood.

At the heart of Nolan’s approach is creating a space where clients can feel heard without judgment.

His work is primarily grounded in Person-Centred Therapy, which means meeting clients where they are and working collaboratively toward the goals that matter to them.

He also draws from evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) based on each client’s individual needs.

From now until December, Nolan is offering reduced-rate therapy with a suggested rate of $80 per session. Pay-what-you-can options are also available, and Nolan has pro-bono spots available for the month of September.

Nolan primarily provides in-person counselling and can also offer virtual appointments as needed.

If cost has been a barrier to accessing counselling, this may be an opportunity to receive support at a rate that works for you.

Have you ever had a reaction that surprised you?

Someone's tone changes and your whole body becomes tense.

A disagreement happens and suddenly you want to leave.

A smell, place, expression, or situation brings up a feeling you weren't expecting.

Then, once the moment passes, you wonder:

“Why did that affect me so much?”

Sometimes our reactions are connected to experiences that taught us to be alert to certain cues.

Even when you logically know you're safe in the present, a reminder of something difficult from the past can still bring up a strong emotional or physical response.

That doesn't mean every strong reaction is caused by trauma. But when certain reactions happen repeatedly or begin affecting your relationships, daily life, or sense of safety, it may be worth becoming curious about what's underneath them.

Therapy can provide a supportive space to understand these patterns without judgment and develop tools for responding differently when triggers arise.

You don't have to understand everything about your past before reaching out for support.

We work with individuals, couples, and children.

Appointments are available weekdays, evenings, and weekends.

Heather, Ashley, and Andrew provide trauma-informed counselling and EMDR support for individuals navigating trauma and PTSD.

Burnout doesn’t always happen all at once.

It builds quietly over time.

Saying yes when you’re already stretched.

Putting your needs last.

Pushing through when you’re tired.

Telling yourself you’ll rest later.

At first, it feels manageable.

But eventually, your mind and body begin to feel the weight of it all.

You might feel constantly drained, overwhelmed, or disconnected in ways that are hard to explain.

Burnout is not a failure.

It’s often a sign that your needs have gone unmet for too long.

And those needs matter.

Rest matters.

Support matters.

You matter.

While Walk & Talk season is nearing an end, there is still some time!

It's not always the conversation that's difficult.. Sometimes it's the setting.

For some people, sitting in an office can make it harder to relax or know where to begin.

Walk & Talk Therapy offers a different approach. Instead of sitting across from your therapist, you walk side by side in a natural outdoor setting, allowing the conversation to unfold at a pace that feels comfortable.

Many people find that movement, fresh air, and nature help them feel more grounded and make it easier to talk about what's on their mind.

Research also suggests that spending time outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood, and support overall mental wellbeing.

(Source: American Psychological Association; Mental Health Foundation)

Sometimes, a change in environment can open the door to a different kind of conversation.

Have you ever finished an argument with your partner and thought: “How did we end up here again?”

The details may be different every time.

This week it's money.

Last week it was chores.

Before that, it was an unanswered text, something an in-law said, or a decision about the future.

But somehow, the conversation ends in a very familiar place.

One person may feel unheard.
The other may feel criticized.

One pushes for a conversation while the other pulls away.

And eventually, both people leave feeling disconnected.

When this happens repeatedly, focusing only on the topic of the latest disagreement may not be enough.

Sometimes there is a relationship pattern underneath it that neither person intended to create.

Couples counselling isn't about choosing who is right.

It can help partners slow the cycle down, understand what's happening underneath their reactions, and develop different ways of responding to one another.

Because sometimes the breakthrough isn't finally winning the argument.

It's realizing why you keep having it.

We are available in-person in Thunder Bay and virtually across Ontario.

Jessica and Andrew provide couples counselling for concerns including communication, infidelity, finances, family planning, and in-law relationships.

Becoming a parent changes nearly every part of your life.

Your routines.

Your relationships.

Your priorities.

Even the way you see yourself.

While this season can bring incredible joy, it can also bring uncertainty, grief, anxiety, and moments where you wonder if you're still the same person you used to be.

These feelings are more common than many people realize.

Adjusting to parenthood isn't just a physical transition.
It's an emotional one too.

Giving yourself permission to acknowledge those feelings isn't weakness.

It's part of caring for yourself.

You deserve support just as much as the people you're caring for.
