🍁🦃 HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM IAFF LOCAL 535 🚒🍂

As families and friends gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Timmins Professional Fire Fighters Association would like to wish everyone a safe, happy, and healthy holiday weekend!

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on what we're thankful for, enjoy good food, and spend time with loved ones. It's also one of the busiest times in the kitchen, so let's keep fire safety a priority!

🔥 THANKSGIVING SAFETY REMINDERS

🍳 Stay in the Kitchen – Never leave cooking unattended. Keep towels, oven mitts, and other combustible materials away from the stove.

🦃 Cook Your Turkey Safely – Keep children and pets away from hot ovens and cooking equipment. Never use an outdoor turkey fryer indoors or in a garage.

🚨 Check Your Alarms – Ensure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas.

🕯️ Be Candle Smart – Keep candles away from decorations and anything that can burn. Consider battery-operated candles instead.

🍂 Outdoor Fire Safety – Follow local burning regulations and never leave an outdoor fire unattended.

🚗 Travel Safely – With increased holiday traffic, slow down, avoid distractions, never drive impaired, and allow extra travel time.

🔥🚒 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 4–10, 2026 🚒🔥

This week, your Timmins Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 535 are joining fire departments and communities across North America in recognizing Fire Prevention Week™.

⚡ This year’s theme:
“Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower™”

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are everywhere in our homes: phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes, e-scooters and many other everyday devices.

Most of us charge something every day. Taking a few simple precautions can help prevent a fire.

🔥 USE YOUR CHARGING SUPERPOWERS

🔌 CHEAP CHARGER? DON’T CHANCE IT.
Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer. The wrong charger can damage a battery and increase the risk of fire.

🔋 FULLY CHARGED? TIME TO UNPLUG.
Unplug your device when it is fully charged. Leaving it plugged in can increase heat and put additional stress on the battery.

🛏️ SOFT SURFACE? HARD PASS.
Charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table, desk or bare floor not on a bed, pillow or couch. Soft surfaces can trap heat and prevent proper airflow.

⚠️ FEELS HOT? STOP USING IT.
Stop using a device or battery if it:
• becomes unusually hot
• starts to swell or change shape
• smells strange
• leaks
• makes popping or hissing sounds
• begins smoking

🛴 FOR TOOLS AND RIDES, CHARGE OUTSIDE.
Whenever possible, charge larger battery-powered equipment such as e-bikes, e-scooters and power tools outside. **Never charge them where they could block an exit.**

✅ BUY SAFELY.
Look for products listed by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL, ETL or CSA. These products have been tested to meet important safety standards.

♻️ RECYCLE BATTERIES RESPONSIBLY.
Never put lithium-ion batteries in household garbage or regular recycling. Take used batteries and rechargeable devices to an appropriate battery recycling location.

🚨 AND DON’T FORGET THE BASICS

Working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and a practiced home fire escape plan can make a life-saving difference.

Take a few minutes during Fire Prevention Week to look around your home:

Where are you charging your devices?
Are you using the correct chargers?
Do you unplug them when they're fully charged?
Would anything you're charging block your way out during a fire?

Fire prevention starts long before the fire department is called.

They’ll eventually find their home on A1 and B2 platoons, respectively. Welcome to the team, and best of luck as you begin this next chapter! 🚒

🔥 ONTARIO FALLEN FIRE FIGHTERS MEMORIAL 🚒

Today, we pause to honour and remember Ontario firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities, as well as those whose lives were taken by occupational illness as a result of their service.

The Ontario Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial is a powerful reminder that the dangers of our profession do not always end when the fire is out or the shift is over.

Behind every name on the memorial is a firefighter, a family, a fire department and a community that will never forget.

For the members of the Timmins Professional Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 535, today carries special meaning as we remember our own members whose names are forever engraved on the Ontario Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial:

🕯️ Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Stojkiewicz
🕯️ Captain Harold “Sonny” Farrell

Four members of the Timmins Fire Department. Four firefighters who dedicated themselves to protecting our community. Four names we will continue to honour and remember.

Today, our thoughts are also with the firefighters in Timmins and across Ontario who continue their fight against occupational cancer and other illnesses caused by the job. We stand with them and their families as they face a battle that too many firefighters have been forced to endure.

We honour those who came before us, support those who continue to fight, and remain committed to making our profession safer for those who will follow.

Their service will never be forgotten.
Their sacrifice will always be remembered.
And those still fighting will never fight alone.

As firefighters, we know that a stronger fire service helps build a stronger community. We ask our community to take a moment today to remember our fallen, support those who continue to fight, and recognize the sacrifices made by firefighters and their families.

This Sunday, help Local 535 fill the boot for Muscular Dystrophy! 🚒🥾

Our firefighters will be at local grocery stores across Timmins from 11 AM to 3 PM collecting donations. You can find us at Walmart, Canadian Tire, Metro, and Independent.
We accept cash donations in the boot, and we’ll also have debit tap machines available for your convenience. 💳

🚒 PLEASE GIVE US ROOM TO WORK 🚒

Over the last several large fires in our community, we have experienced an increasing problem with people coming to the scene to watch what is happening. In some cases, the congestion has become significant enough that police have been required to direct or block traffic so emergency crews can operate safely.

When a fire occurs in an area without fire hydrants, our challenge becomes even greater. Tankers must continuously shuttle water from a water source to the fire scene. These large emergency vehicles need clear roads and enough room to safely travel back and forth. A vehicle blocking or slowing that route can interfere with the water supply firefighters are relying on.

We understand that seeing smoke, emergency vehicles and a large fire naturally draws attention, but a fire scene is an active emergency, not a spectator area.

Please do not drive to an emergency scene to see what is happening. Avoid the area, keep access roads clear, follow the directions of police and emergency personnel, and give responding apparatus plenty of room.

Every minute counts. Every load of water counts.
