Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reporting that their systems are currently down and they are unable to issue work permits at the port-of-entry. This is a national issue, affecting all ports-of-entry.

Travellers who require work permits and are arriving at Canadian ports-of-entry are being admitted as visitors, and being asked to return in order to process work permits. Lengthy delays are also being reported.

Breaking news out of Canada today. The Canadian government has announced that in response to a significant increase in asylum claims from Mexican citizens, Canadian travel document requirements for citizens of Mexico will change, and the visa requirement for certain citizens of Mexico will be reinstated.

Effective tonight, all Electronic Travel Authorizations (eTA) linked to Mexican passports will be cancelled unless the passport holder also holds a valid Canadian work or study permit.

Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa, or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10-years, will be able to apply for a new electronic travel authorization (eTA). Those who do not meet the exemption, will be required to apply for a Canadian visitor visa.

An eTA is for air travel only. Mexican citizens who are eligible for an eTA still need a visa if they plan to travel to Canada by car, bus, train, or boat.

IRCC clarifies requirements for digital nomads.

In the post-pandemic world we are seeing an increase in the number of digital nomads - those who can perform their jobs remotely from anywhere in the world. As part of Canada's Tech Talent Strategy, IRCC has announced that digital nomads only need visitor status to relocate to Canada for up to 6 months at a time while they perform their work remotely. Digital nomads may perform work for a foreign employer, be self-employed, working for themselves or providing services to clients outside of Canada. Digital nomads who intend on entering the Canadian labour market, must obtain a work permit prior to doing so.

IRCC Update on International Students: The Minister has announced an intake cap on the number of international study permit applications for the next two year period. A portion of the cap will be allocated to each province and territory. As of today, every new study permit application will require an attestation letter from a province or territory. Study permit renewals and current study permit holders will not be impacted. Those pursuing master's and doctoral degrees, as well as elementary and secondary education are not included in the cap.

In the weeks ahead, it is expected that open work permits will be restricted to spouses of international students in master's and doctoral programs only.

If these measures impact your application or eligibility, please contact our office to discuss further.
