In Canada, there is a significant number of children who face food insecurity as they don’t have access to sufficient amounts or nutritious foods for breakfast. In fact, 1 in every 3 kids comes to school hungry. This is even more prevalent in Toronto as according to according to the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, 40% of all children come to school hungry each day with 68% of students in high needs areas coming to school without eating. Skipping breakfast can detrimentally effect a student’s ability to learn and stay healthy with studies showing that children who eat a good/nutritious breakfast perform better in school with a better memory, higher energy, concentration, and higher test scores. Those who do not eat breakfast are more likely to feel tired and perform poorly academically as they can’t concentrate as well. In the long run those who do not eat breakfast can affect their physical growth, cause weaker immune systems and can have an increased risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease. Childhood hunger can also last for generations and hinder peoples future opportunities so it is important that we educate others about the importance of food security and a nutritious breakfast.
