For many years, I have had the privilege and pleasure of photographing the Art with Heart fundraising art auction, on behalf of Casey House. At events, of course, photos of attendees smiling to the camera are common and valued. In addition, I enjoy "found moments", candid images where the subject is most likely not making eye contact with the camera. From my vantage point, these images capture the essence of the event in a way which posed images don't quite manage to do. They are less staged, sometimes less guarded. For these, I usually light the images differently, opting to rely on ambient light almost entirely or as the primary light source.
From this year's auction, here are four which I like. The first shows the auctioneer Perry Tung (seen from behind) speaking with a patron in the large entrance of the Carlu. The art works were displayed in this space, with large bright lights mounted at floor level. In this first image, the art patron's face is being lit by one of these floor lamps. In another photo, taking during bidding, a patron is seen texting on his phone, with the light on his face coming entirely from his phone. Next, a photo of Perry on stage during the auction. I have taken similar "back of stage" images almost every year, often chosing to process the images as high contrast black & white, with the auctioneer a silouette against the room of patrons beyond. This year, the stage had two large, red & orange floral arrangements which I found visually appealing, so here is the colour version of that shot. And finally, an image of a patron bidding during a particularly enthusiastic lot. While the bidder has a cool, calm expression, the woman behind her shows an expression of surprise which captures that particular moment in the bidding - the bids were increasing rapidly, beyond the estimated value of the work, an excitement was growing. Seconds after this image, the bidding went beyond this particular patron's appetite, and the lot eventually went to someone else.
