Following a presentation by David Suzuki, Canada Nickel’s Scott MacDougall, VP of Carbon & Energy Development, and Sydney Oakes, Director of Indigenous Relations and Public Affairs, took the stage at the Assembly of First Nations’ National Climate Gathering to discuss carbon capture and why there is no path to net zero without genuine partnerships with First Nations.

At the Crawford Nickel Project, we are incorporating carbon capture opportunities from the outset. Our IPT Carbonation process uses mine tailings to permanently store CO₂, while we are also testing underground storage through an in situ carbon injection pilot. Projects like Crawford have the potential to help Canada reach net zero, but they must be developed in partnership with First Nations. That means First Nations help shape decisions from the start, and their priorities and environmental stewardship help guide how projects are developed.

Over the weekend, Canada Nickel’s Sydney Oakes, Director of Indigenous Relations and Public Affairs, and Brendan Coyne, Core Technician Supervisor, joined community members for Mattagami First Nation’s Mattagami 5K Moose-Meet. The run raised funds for the Miikogi Greenhouse Project.

Canada Nickel is proud to support the Miikogi Greenhouse Project as a Gold Sponsor. The four-season greenhouse is part of Mattagami First Nation’s food sovereignty initiative, which also includes a hydroponic farm and community garden. These projects will help increase access to fresh, healthy food while supporting education and long-term community wellness.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Survivors of residential schools and remember the children who never came home. We also recognize the families and communities who continue to live with their intergenerational impacts.

Today, we wear orange shirts to remember that every child matters. The truths shared by Survivors call on all of us to listen and learn. Reconciliation is an ongoing responsibility, and that work continues every day.

At Forward Summit East, Canada Nickel's Director of Indigenous Relations and Public Affairs, Sydney Oakes, moderated the Indigenous Participation in Canada's Emerging Defence Economy panel with Chief Bruce Archibald of Taykwa Tagamou Nation, Leo "Couchie" Hurtubise of LaFlesche Inc., Chris Webb of Nasittuq Corporation, and Dan Lovell of Sussex Strategy Group.

They discussed the role Indigenous Nations and businesses can play in defence procurement and supply chains, and the growing need for critical minerals to support Canada's defence industry. Nickel is used in specialty alloys and stainless steel for naval vessels, armoured equipment, and aerospace applications, and projects like Crawford can help meet that demand. Developing that supply responsibly means working in partnership from the start.

As the Crawford Nickel Project advances toward construction, Canada Nickel continues to put in place the equipment, technology and expertise needed to develop a safe, efficient and world-class mining operation in Northeastern Ontario.

Canada Nickel has selected SMS Equipment and Komatsu to provide Crawford’s load, haul and mining support fleet equipment and associated autonomous technology.
Komatsu joins a growing group of international partners supporting Crawford, reflecting the project’s ability to attract global technology and expertise to one of Canada’s most significant critical mineral opportunities.

SMS Equipment’s experience implementing these technologies at other Canadian operations, together with Komatsu’s proven mining technologies, is expected to substantially reduce risk during Crawford’s start-up and ongoing operation.
