We are sharing a sneak peek of our anticipated project in 2026. St. George & St. Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church in Milton will begin construction next Spring marking a new milestone for the growing community.

We also want to give a warm thanks to all of our collaborators, clients, and followers this year. As 2025 comes to a close, we would like wish a lovely holiday season for everyone and their loved ones.

Last Friday, our office visited the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, in Kleinburg McMichael Canadian Art Collection to celebrate the holidays. The team had the chance to enjoy a tour of the Early Days collection.

A one day retreat from the office was a wonderful way to celebrate the close of 2025. Taking a moment to enjoy these winter views reminds us of the importance of balance and reflection after a busy year.

Upcoming holiday hours:
Our office will be closed from December 24th at noon until we return to the office Monday, January 5th.

Reimagining Church, Land and Community is a two-day gathering for church and denominational leaders, researchers, consultants, urban planners, architects, social-purpose developers, foundation leaders, donors and government partners.

LAL is excited to be a conference partner for the Reimagining Church, Land and Community Conference taking place at Wycliffe College, Out, Toronto on May 13th & 14th 2025.

Our firm strongly believes in revitalizing church buildings to be better adapted for their communities. Throughout the years, Larkin Architect Limited has been involved in countless projects to provide additions, accessibility upgrades and renovations to church buildings of all denominations and sizes. We believe every building project is unique as each community holds different needs and aspirations. Our hope is that every building that we work on carries its own community’s narrative that will be shared with future users and generations.

LAL is proud to have been the architect in 2007 for Dorothy Ley Hospice, a pioneering example of dignified end-of-life care in a comfortable home-like environment. In 2023 we were honoured to have been retained again for an interior alterations project to update functionality and expand this care model.

Our work included converting a family room, den, and part of a storage room into two additional resident rooms, transforming the kitchenette into a nutrition alcove by reusing existing millwork, and converting the staff shower and washroom into a universal washroom. Our scope also included the renovation of the resident care station to improve the functionality of this high traffic area. We also renovated the resident and family shower rooms into a more practical layout and converted the adjacent two-piece washroom into a family washroom.

The expansion designs were developed with input from staff and volunteers, and in compliance with Ministry of Health and IPAC Standards. During the project, hospice operations were temporarily relocated to ensure a swift and efficient renovation.

LAL is excited to share photos from the completion of our renovation work at St Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church in Etobicoke.

We collaborated with the parish to enhance their facilities, focusing on accessibility and modern design to make spaces more functional and welcoming. Inside, we renovated the existing serveries on the ground and second floor, while also updating the parish hall washrooms. To address accessibility, we converted an existing storage space into a universal washroom and added a new exterior barrier-free ramp.

We are proud to have contributed to creating a more accessible and inviting space for the St Andrew’s Community.

In 2024 LAL had the privilege to work on a Sanctuary renovation for Nativity of Our Lord in Etobicoke. Our work included renovating the sanctuary, liturgical furniture, lighting, wall surfaces, and providing audio-visual enhancements. These enhancements increase the effectiveness and accessibility of the worship space, ensuring everyone can fully participate in the liturgy.

Custom light fixtures from Nelson & Garrett provide an elegant addition to the existing space, distinct but complimentary to the existing architecture. Most importantly they dramatically brighten the space and provide upplight to highlight the warm wood ceilings, enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of the sanctuary.

While the overall project goal was to update and brighten the Sanctuary and Nave to improve the worship experience, this project also became a chance to think about the experience of the Nativity in a contemporary context. The cross and corpus, now set against a Venetian plaster panel, features a piece of plaster artwork by Roza Danzig featuring the “Tree of Life,” a key symbol for the parish that represents new life, hope, and the joy of the resurrection.

We recently hosted a memorable Open House event at Larkin Architect Limited to celebrate a significant milestone. As of January 1, 2025, Roberto Chiotti will join fellow founding partner, John Reynolds, in retirement. This event was a wonderful opportunity to honor our past, enjoy the present, and look forward to the future together.

We gathered to reflect on the incredible journey of LAL, celebrating the contributions of Roberto and John, whose vision and leadership have shaped our firm. The evening was filed with great conversations, shared memories, and a sense of camaraderie as we raised a glass to their remarkable careers.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in this celebration. Your support and presence made the event truly special.

Last week, our office attended our annual summer retreat at the Scarborough Bluffs to embrace the future opportunities ahead of us. The day was filled with open discussions and team building activities that allowed us to pause and reflect on our ideas and emotions with our work and office culture. As an architectural office, we feel called to contemplate our future direction, while also ensuring that we are informed by the firm’s history and memories.
