Executive Sound Board

Executive Sound Board Leaders in technology companies work with us when they realize it’s one thing to optimize code, bu If you can relate to any of the above, you’re not alone.

Technology leaders, executives, and founders commonly report the following frustrations:
• inability to execute on organizational vision and strategy;
• operational silos that fail to communicate – causing unproductive conflict, cynicism, and apathy;
• problems with quality, implementation, and customer satisfaction. At the same time, engineers, developers, and technology professionals often c

omplain of the following:
• unclear requirements that lead to frustrating rework;
• too many priorities – resulting in overwhelm, burnout, and technical debt that never gets cleaned up;
• management decisions that seem disconnected from operational realities. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. I help executives, leaders, engineers, and teams in small to mid-sized technology companies dramatically improve their communication and effectiveness, which produces the following tangible benefits:
• clarity of vision, alignment, and collaboration – within work groups and across functional units;
• dramatic improvements in morale, quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction;
• engagement, fulfillment, and flow in the workplace. I am a seasoned technology professional who has walked in your shoes, and also brings significant training in psychology and executive coaching. Unlike other coaches and facilitators who are heavy on soft skills and light on real world experience and results, I am an engineer with over 13 years of experience at a rapid-growth, high-stress, mission critical tech start-up – which grew from a nascent 12-person team into a world-leading organization of 300+ employees, and ultimately provided a successful exit for the shareholders. Having worked in DevOps, Product Management, Sales, Customer Success, and international Project Management, I’ve seen it all. I have developed business processes, led Agile transformation initiatives, navigated two corporate mergers, helped design and implement a major organizational restructuring, and trained customers, partners, and staff along the way. As a seasoned technology professional, I speak your language, and I have lived and breathed the challenges you face every day. I am also a skilled executive coach, with credentials from the Center for Executive Coaching, Newfield Network, and the International Coaching Federation (ICF). If you are a leader in a small to mid-sized technology company and would benefit from the clarity, confidence, and peace of mind that come with dramatically improved performance and team cohesion, please reach out to book a half-hour exploratory session. I would be delighted to learn about your specific challenges and see if we might be a mutual match.

Overwhelm is so common it's practically an epidemic.

But it doesn't have to be.

One surprisingly simple tool has been a game-changer for many of my clients:

It's called a Time Study, and it works like this:

1) For the next two weeks, track how you spend your time in 30-minute increments (at most, 15 is better). Don't rely on your calendar — track how you actually spend your time. Be honest.

2) Rate each activity as high, medium, or low value. Ask yourself these questions:
(i) does this have to be done?
(ii) does it have to be done now?
(iii) does it have to be done by me?

3) Ruthlessly flag anything you can eliminate, consolidate, delegate, or automate (hint: take a hard look at recurring meetings). Write down any actions you can take to reclaim your time and attention.

4) Commit to three specific actions you'll take this week.

5) Commit to one new policy or principle that you're willing to practice until it's a habit. For example, "I don't accept meeting invitations unless there's a written agenda and a clear reason for me to attend."

6) Repeat this exercise quarterly, and share it with your team.

"Overwhelm" is an abstract concept that ultimately represents a feeling. Focus instead on the concrete choices you make and the feeling will take care of itself.

Ever been in a conversation with someone who repeats the same thing over and over again, or continues explaining LONG after you've gotten the point?

Would you like to know how to make it stop?

It often comes down to this:

You may understand the other person, but that doesn't mean they feel understood.

When we speak, we're driven in large part by a desire to feel heard. Once that need is met, the urge to keep talking naturally dissipates.

One of the most effective ways to have someone feel understood is to paraphrase what they've said in your own words. This is often called "mirroring", and it's a great way to demonstrate active listening.

Try gently interrupting with something like this: "I think I get what you're saying. Can I share what I've heard so you can let me know if I've missed anything?"

On the flipside, the next time you notice you're repeating yourself, try asking the other person to reflect back what they're hearing. This gives them the chance to check their understanding, and might spare them the same frustration.

What are your best communication tips?
