In addition to the Antarctic ice and the depths of the ocean, microplastics have also been found in clouds hanging atop two Japanese mountains, a new and concerning area for them to be located.
The alarmingly high concentrations of microplastic particles in the clouds surrounding Mount Fuji and Mount Oyama in Japan demonstrate how the pollution may travel great distances, tainting the planet's agriculture and water through "plastic rainfall."
It is believed that the plastic is producing greenhouse gases and forming clouds since it was so abundant in the samples that the researchers gathered.
Findings regarding clouds above Mount Fuji and Mount Oyama highlight how microplastics are highly mobile
