This year's World Oceans Day theme, Awaken New Depths, highlights the wonders of our oceans and the critical need to protect them. Catalyzing action for our ocean and climate inspires us to take meaningful steps in preserving marine ecosystems.

At Ecofish, we develop collaborative solutions that align with these themes. Our Marine Services team combines technical expertise, scientific rigor, and regulatory insights to support sustainable marine projects across various sectors like ports, marine harvesting, and renewable energy. Ecofish is also invested in working with First Nations and Indigenous knowledge holders in monitoring marine resources and implementing effective and climate resilient restoration projects.

Our services ensure regulatory compliance and minimize environmental impacts through environmental assessments, permitting, construction monitoring, and habitat restoration. Long-term monitoring and innovative research help us protect and restore our oceans for future generations.

Ecofish, in partnership with Laich-Kwil-Tach Environmental Assessment Ltd, has enhanced our understanding of fish migration in the Campbell River watershed through the JHTMON-6 Fish Passage Study. In recognition of World Fish Migration Day and its theme, Free Flow, our research highlights the crucial role of stream flow conditions in either supporting or impeding fish migration. The study offers valuable insights into the potential relationship between flow diversion at BC Hydro operations and fish movements past physical barriers. These findings are essential for advancing a sustainable water management regime that balances the needs of fish with power generation.

Terrestrial habitat restoration has the potential to sequester large amounts of carbon while simultaneously acting as effective habitat for biodiversity globally. However, effectively determining where initiatives could achieve these dual wins requires the ability to characterize environmental conditions and carbon potential across large areas.

The IRSS Lab at UBC Forestry and Ecofish Research are harnessing the power of earth observation data to identify restoration locations across British Columbia with the potential to sequester large amounts of carbon and provide effective future habitat for woodland caribou. By coupling spatial forest growth models with satellite-derived assessments of caribou habitat, this project aims to map where habitat restoration actions in BC will maximize dual win scenarios for caribou recovery and carbon sequestration.

As we observe International Day for Biological Diversity, with its theme "Be part of the plan,” this research ultimately provides a road map for improved assessments of habitat restoration when considering carbon and biodiversity simultaneously.
