🖊️ It’s not only students heading back to school…it’s grant writers too!

As the busy fall season kicks off, think of your grant applications like your first day back in class: organized, intentional, and ready to impress.

Here are 3 Back-to-School-Inspired Grant Writing Tips to set you up for success:

✨ Pack Your Backpack: Gather your essentials early - updated budgets, success stories, and partner letters. Don’t wait until the “bell rings.”

✨ Sharpen Your Pencils: Refine your narrative. Be clear, bold, and focused - just like that first essay you wanted your teacher to remember.

✨ Do Your Homework: Every funder has different “assignments.” Read their guidelines closely and tailor your answers so you’re speaking their language.

💡Just like school, consistency and preparation build credibility over time. Every strong grant is a step toward long-term trust and bigger opportunities.

This fall, let’s turn grant season into growth season.

Granting and partnership building co-exist. And with each partner engagement, I pose the question: how do we design collaborations that create acceleration, resilience, and systemic change?

I often turn to these 7 principles as anchors for how to work differently and better.

1️⃣ Anchor in Shared Ambition
Not simply alignment on goals, but a bigger “why” that transcends individual agendas.
—> Begin every partnership by co-defining the change you want to see.

2️⃣ Design for Mutual Acceleration
Partnerships should be catalysts, not compromises.
—> Structure the collaboration so each partner grows faster and stronger through it.

3️⃣ Co-Create with Inclusion at the Core
Inclusion must be a staple.
—> Bring traditionally excluded voices into the design phase, not after decisions are made.

4️⃣ Build Radical Clarity
Beyond transparency, clarity makes complexity actionable.
—> Nothing should be assumed. Eatablish open channels, clear roles, and shared language from day one.

5️⃣ Leverage Asymmetry as Strength
Differences create power when harnessed intentionally.
—> Pair unlikely partners (policy + grassroots + finance + community) to unlock fresh solutions.

6️⃣ Engineer for Endurance
Celebrate short-term wins with an eye toward long-term resilience.
—> Bake adaptability, renewal cycles, and exit strategies into your model.

7️⃣ Embed Learning Loops
Partnerships should be living systems.
—> Measure what matters, share learnings in real time, and adapt quickly together.

What guiding principles have shaped the partnerships that mattered most in your work?

Are you a Black-led and Black-serving community organization with intentions to submit a application to the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) Resilient Community Fund?

A group of Black Program Managers at OTF have come together to create a coaching clinic to support Black-led and Black-serving as you interact with the granting process. The goal of this coaching clinic is to offer Black-led organizations the chance to receive coaching from program managers at OTF.

These coaching clinics will allow you to learn more about OTF and ask project-specific questions for the upcoming Resilient granting deadline on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, something that has not always been available in our previous sessions.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:
Each applicant can register for a 20-minute session on either of the two available dates: Wednesday, September 27, 2023 and Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
