One of the first decisions couples face when applying for spousal sponsorship is whether to apply under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class or the Family Class.

Here is the basic difference:

πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ INLAND SPONSORSHIP

The Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class is generally for couples where the sponsored spouse or partner is living in Canada with the sponsor.

The sponsored person must have valid temporary resident status in Canada, subject to certain exceptions under the public policy for spouses and common-law partners.

One potential advantage:

The sponsored spouse may be eligible for an open work permit while the permanent residence application is being processed.

🌎 OUTLAND SPONSORSHIP

The Family Class is generally used when the sponsored spouse or partner is outside Canada.

However, being physically outside Canada does not necessarily mean the couple must use Outland sponsorship. There can be situations where a spouse living abroad applies through the Family Class while visiting Canada.

So how do you choose?

Consider:

πŸ“ Where the sponsored spouse is living
✈️ Travel plans
πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Immigration status in Canada
πŸ’Ό Need for a Canadian work permit
❀️ Whether you are living together
πŸ“„ Which sponsorship class fits the circumstances

There is no universal "better" option.

The right choice depends on the couple's actual situation.

πŸ“Œ Save this post if you are deciding how to sponsor your spouse.

If your Ontario job offer is in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation, these are the main applicant requirements you need to know.

πŸ’Ό JOB OFFER

You need a full-time, permanent job offer in Ontario.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ’Ό WORK EXPERIENCE

You may meet the requirement through one of several options:

β€’ 6 months of consecutive paid full-time experience in the job offer position within the previous 12 months

OR

β€’ 3 months of consecutive paid full-time experience in the job offer position within the previous 12 months if you are a qualifying recent Ontario graduate

OR

β€’ 2 years of cumulative paid full-time experience in the same NOC occupation within the previous 5 years

OR

β€’ A required licence or authorization for the occupation, where applicable

πŸ—£οΈ LANGUAGE

Generally:

β€’ CLB 6 in English or French

For listed skilled trades:

β€’ CLB 5

There is also a language-test exemption for certain recent Ontario graduates with qualifying Ontario credentials.

πŸŽ“ EDUCATION

Generally:

β€’ At least a one-year post-secondary degree or diploma or equivalent

For listed skilled trades:

β€’ Canadian secondary school diploma or equivalent

🌎 OTHER REQUIREMENTS

You must also meet the applicable requirements regarding:

β€’ legal status in Canada, if applicable
β€’ licensing
β€’ intention to live and work in Ontario
β€’ your employer's approved employment position

This is only the eligibility side. Your EOI score is a separate issue.

You can meet the minimum requirements and still not receive an invitation.

Save this post if your job is TEER 0–3.

09/02/2026

If you have an Express Entry profile, your CRS score is one of the most important numbers you need to understand.

CRS stands for Comprehensive Ranking System.

IRCC uses the CRS to rank eligible candidates in the Express Entry pool.

Your score can be affected by:

πŸ‘€ Age
πŸŽ“ Education
πŸ—£οΈ English and French
πŸ’Ό Canadian work experience
🌎 Foreign work experience
πŸ’ Spouse's qualifications
πŸ“œ Certificate of qualification
πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Certain additional factors

The maximum CRS score is 1,200 points.

But here's the part many people misunderstand:

There is no single CRS score that guarantees an invitation.

The required score changes depending on the type of Express Entry draw and the candidates in the pool.

IRCC can hold:

β€’ General draws
β€’ Program-specific draws
β€’ Category-based draws

For example, a CRS score that was enough in one type of draw may not be enough in another.

And a candidate with a lower CRS score may potentially receive an invitation in a category-based draw if they meet the category requirements.

πŸ“Œ Don't ask only:

"Is my CRS 470 good?"

The better question is:

"Which Express Entry draw could I realistically qualify for, and how can I improve my profile?"

Save this post β€” we'll break down each part of the CRS in the next posts.

Ontario has completely redesigned the OINP.

The new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream can be used by:

β€’ Foreign workers with qualifying job offers in Ontario, in any NOC TEER category 0–5

β€’ Eligible self-employed physicians, who may apply without a job offer

For applicants with a job offer, the process is employer-led.

Here is how it works:

1️⃣ Your employer registers with the OINP Employer Portal and submits your job offer.

2️⃣ Your employer gives you the job offer ID.

3️⃣ You use that ID to register your Expression of Interest (EOI).

You have 30 calendar days from the date your employer submits the job offer to register your EOI.

4️⃣ Ontario ranks candidates in the EOI pool and issues Invitations to Apply (ITAs).

5️⃣ If you receive an ITA, your employer must submit an application for approval of the employment position within 14 calendar days.

6️⃣ You then submit your OINP application and pay the fee within 17 calendar days of receiving the ITA.

7️⃣ If Ontario approves your application, you receive a provincial nomination.

8️⃣ You then apply to IRCC for permanent residence.

Important: receiving an ITA does not guarantee nomination. You must still prove that you meet the stream requirements and support the information you claimed in your EOI.

And remember: OINP nomination is not the final decision on PR. IRCC makes the final decision on permanent residence.

Save this post if you are considering the new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream.

Yes β€” being unemployed does not automatically prevent you from sponsoring your spouse.

For most spousal sponsorship applications, there is no minimum income requirement for the sponsor.

However, this does NOT mean that income is completely irrelevant.

The sponsor must generally:

βœ… Be able to support the sponsored family member

βœ… Sign a sponsorship undertaking

βœ… Promise to provide financial support for the sponsored person for the required period

βœ… Make sure the sponsored person does not need social assistance, except for disability

There are also situations where a sponsor may need to meet an income requirement β€” particularly when sponsoring certain other family members.

But spousal sponsorship is different.

For a spouse or partner, the sponsor generally does not need to meet the Minimum Necessary Income requirement.

So:

❌ "I'm unemployed, therefore I can't sponsor my spouse."

Not necessarily.

The important question is whether you meet all of the sponsorship requirements and whether you have an issue that makes you ineligible to sponsor.

πŸ“Œ Save this if you are worried that unemployment automatically prevents spousal sponsorship.

The OINP Streams That Closed

🚨 OINP Redesign
8 Streams Are Closed

🚨 Ontario has closed 8 previous OINP streams.

As part of the program redesign, Ontario has replaced the previous streams with the new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream.

The following streams are closed:

❌ Employer Job Offer: Foreign Worker
❌ Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills
❌ Employer Job Offer: International Student
❌ Master's Graduate Stream
❌ PhD Graduate Stream
❌ Express Entry Human Capital Priorities
❌ Express Entry French-Speaking Skilled Worker
❌ Express Entry Skilled Trades

What does this mean?

If you were only planning to apply through one of these streams, you may need to review your options and determine whether another pathway is available.

Ontario is expected to open the new Expression of Interest system later this summer.

πŸ‡«πŸ‡· Speak French? Your Canadian immigration options may be broader than you think.

Canada continues to support Francophone immigration outside Quebec, with a goal of strengthening French-speaking communities across the country.

Recently, the Government of Canada announced new funding to support Francophone immigration projects, including initiatives in the Northwest Territories focused on:

βœ… Helping French-speaking and bilingual newcomers access immigration information

βœ… Supporting recognition of foreign credentials

βœ… Connecting employers with skilled Francophone workers

βœ… Helping newcomers settle permanently in Francophone communities

But what does this mean for immigration applicants?

French language skills can open additional opportunities through:

🍁 Express Entry
French-language proficiency may provide additional points and can help candidates qualify under French-language category-based selections.

🍁 Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
Several provinces have pathways designed to attract French-speaking workers.

🍁 Francophone communities outside Quebec
Canada actively supports the growth of French-speaking communities across the country, creating more opportunities for newcomers who want to live and work in a bilingual environment.

If you speak French and are planning to immigrate to Canada, it may be worth exploring whether your language skills can strengthen your immigration strategy.

🏒 Ontario employers: OINP has changed.

The new Ontario Workforce Priority Stream is designed to help employers retain workers in occupations where finding qualified employees can be challenging.

Some important changes:

βœ… Employers will need to submit a new job offer under the updated system.

βœ… Employers who previously registered in the employer portal will not need to register again.

βœ… Rural employers may benefit from more flexible business revenue requirements.

The redesign also introduces stronger compliance measures, including enhanced screening and enforcement activities.

If your business relies on international talent, understanding these changes can help you plan ahead.

πŸŽ“ International Students in Canada:
Important Co-op Work Permit Change

πŸŽ“ International students: a major change to co-op work permits in Canada

Starting April 1, 2026, eligible post-secondary international students no longer need a separate co-op work permit to complete mandatory work placements required by their study program.

This includes placements such as:

βœ… Co-op placements
βœ… Internships
βœ… Practicums
βœ… Other required student work placements

Previously, many students needed both:

πŸ“Œ A study permit
+
πŸ“Œ A separate co-op work permit

Now, eligible students can complete their required placement using their study permit.

---

# # # Who is eligible?

You may participate in a required work placement if:

βœ”οΈ You are a full-time student at a Canadian designated learning institution (DLI)

βœ”οΈ Your program requires a work placement to complete your degree, diploma, or certificate

βœ”οΈ You have a valid study permit (or applied to extend it before expiry)

βœ”οΈ Your study permit conditions allow you to work

βœ”οΈ The work placement is 50% or less of your program

---

# # # Important points:

⚠️ This change does not mean international students can work unlimited hours in any co-op job.

The work placement must:

β€’ Be required by your program
β€’ Be approved by your school
β€’ Be part of your studies

⚠️ Secondary school students still need a co-op work permit.

---

If you are an international student in Canada and are unsure whether this change applies to your situation, it is important to review your study permit conditions and program requirements.

OINP Requirements Are Changing

OINP Redesign:
Higher Requirements for Applicants

πŸ“’ Ontario is raising the bar for some immigration pathways.

As part of the OINP redesign, Ontario introduced new requirements aimed at improving program integrity and selecting candidates who can successfully establish themselves in the province.

Some important changes include:

πŸ“š Education requirements

Many applicants under the new Workforce Priority Stream will need post-secondary education or a Canadian secondary school diploma, depending on the pathway.

πŸ—£οΈ Language requirements

Language requirements will apply:

β€’ TEER 0–3 pathway: generally CLB 6
β€’ TEER 4–5 pathway: CLB 4

πŸ’Ό Focus on employment

The new program places significant emphasis on applicants who already have a qualifying employment connection in Ontario.

The goal is to help Ontario employers retain workers in occupations where they need talent.

If you are planning your Ontario immigration pathway, understanding the new requirements before applying is important.
