Dear IENs,

One of the easiest ways people can sabotage you at work is through “help.”

And no, this doesn’t mean you should reject support or believe everyone has bad intentions. Nursing is a team sport, and healthy collaboration matters, but be mindful. Sometimes “let me help you” can quietly turn into:

-taking over your learning opportunities
-setting you up to miss important steps
-asking you to do things outside your scope
-creating dependency so your confidence is weakened
-later distancing themselves when accountability comes knocking

Not every helping hand is genuine mentorship. Some are control disguised as kindness.

-Ask questions
- Understand your responsibilities
-Verify policies
-Document appropriately
-And never hand over your professional judgment just because someone seems more experienced or louder.

Accept guidance but protect your license, your confidence, and your growth.

Dear IEN,

Leaving the bedside is not failure.
It is evolution.

Nursing in Canada is not limited to one path and the earlier you understand this, the better you position yourself.

There are roles beyond bedside.
There is growth beyond survival.
There is ownership beyond employment.
The question is not “what else can I do?”
The question is “how can I leverage my license better?”

At MoConsulting, we help you see the options and move strategically.

Hello Nurse,

I'm really excited to invite you to our upcoming session:

Understanding Nursing Practice in Canada 🇨🇦

đź—“ April 28, 2026
⏰ 2:00 PM EST
📍 Online (link will be shared)

Guest Speaker: Nurse MJ (RN | IEN Integration Expert)

Hosted by: IEN Circle

This is one session you don’t want to miss especially if you’re still navigating practice here in Canada.

We’ll be breaking down:

-What nursing culture in Canada actually looks like
-Accountability (what it really means here)
-Scope of practice (what you can & cannot do)
-Key differences from what many of us are used to

A lot of IENs unintentionally step outside their scope trying to “help”… and that’s where problems start.

This session is about helping you protect your license, build confidence, and practice safely.

You should attend if you want to:

-Avoid common mistakes that lead to investigations
-Understand how to think and act within your scope
-Feel more confident in your day-to-day nursing decisions

Let’s do this right and support each other..

No one really talks about this part.

The part where you come into a new system not as a beginner but somehow feel like one.

The part where your years of experience don’t always translate into immediate trust or recognition.

The part where you start questioning yourself, not because you lack knowledge… but because everything around you is different.

There is a quiet kind of grief that many internationally educated nurses carry.

You grieve:
-The confidence you once had
-The respect you were used to
-The ease of practicing in a familiar system
-The ability to speak freely without second-guessing yourself and yet, you’re expected to be grateful.

So you keep going.
You adapt.
You push through.
But that doesn’t mean the loss isn’t real.

This is your reminder:
What you’re feeling is valid.
You are not starting from scratch, you are rebuilding from experience.

In that process, you are becoming a nurse with depth, resilience, and a perspective that cannot be taught.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone.

Dear IEN,

Not every battle needs your voice.
Not every moment needs your energy.
Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is observe, understand, and move strategically.

The reality is this:
You may find yourself in environments where your competence is questioned before it's even seen.

That’s where wisdom comes in.
âś” Learn the culture
âś” Read the room
âś” Protect your license
âś” Move with intention, not emotion

Timing, awareness, and strategy will take you further than reacting ever will.

This is how you stay safe.
This is how you grow.

Unconscious bias against internationally educated nurses (IENs) is real, and often invisible.

Many IENs enter the Canadian healthcare system with strong clinical knowledge, years of experience, and a deep commitment to patient care. Yet, they are sometimes met with unspoken assumptions about their competence, communication, or training, simply because they were educated elsewhere.

This isn’t always intentional.
It shows up subtly:

• Being questioned more than peers
• Fewer opportunities for growth or leadership
• Exclusion from team dynamics
• Faster escalation to complaints or regulatory bodies

Over time, these patterns create an uneven playing field, one where IENs have to work twice as hard to be seen as equally competent.

But here’s the truth:
Competence is not determined by geography.

As healthcare professionals and leaders, we have a responsibility to reflect on our biases, challenge unfair systems, and create environments where every nurse is supported to succeed.
Awareness is the first step. Action must follow.

Let’s build a system that evaluates nurses based on skill, integrity, and care, not assumptions.

Many internationally educated nurses are highly skilled but struggle because:

-They are unsure when to escalate
-They are not confident in documentation standards
-They try to “figure things out” alone
And that is where risk begins.

Protecting your license is not about being afraid.
It is about:
âś” Practicing with awareness
âś” Documenting with intention
âś” Speaking up early

If you are an IEN navigating the Canadian system, please remember:
You don’t have to do this alone.

Dear Internationally Educated Nurses,

Nobody prepared us for how different the Canadian healthcare system can be.

Many IENs struggle with:
• Documentation expectations
• Workplace politics
• Professional practice rules
• Fear of College investigations

And sadly, some nurses get into trouble simply because they didn't know what to do or who to ask.

So we created something for you.
