CBD is my jam.

I can’t get enough of it.

My friends will tell you how awesome I am when I am on my game with it.

My clients literally rave about me when I am on it.

Curious what I'm talking about?

Well it turns out my boss did.

He literally would take every single person in the company out for lunch. 1:1 with the Chairman. I was gobsmacked.

As Nicole says in the video “Who runs a company AND takes EVERY SINGLE PERSON OUT FOR LUNCH?”

It was my first real job at Lang Marketing (then Chris Lang and Associates). I was 28 years old and the Chairman (Chris) said ‘come on we’re going for lunch’. I think I had been working there for 8 months or so.

Thankfully he gave me no notice so I had very little time to get nervous.

Lunch was at McDonald’s.

We sat down and I am peppered with questions about myself - not the client work. He just wanted to know how I was doing, what was going on in my life.

Every lunch ended with ‘Let me know how I can help.’

Seriously. Who does that?

Chris did that.

My first lunch with Chris was in the spring of 1989, my last in the fal of 2020 and many in between. Over 30 years of lunches.

He ended our time together per usual - ‘ Let me know how I can help.’

It may have been our last time together in person, but it wasn’t the last time we spoke as Chris had me on rotation on his ‘call list’ ending with “Let me know how I can help.”

Take a listen to this short video (4:02) for the passion and care in the voice of the staff about the kind of culture that his leadership brought.

His leadership beget all our leadership.

We modelled what we were taught and we thrived in a culture of trust, respect, innovation, creativity and laughter.

Our culture was the embodiment of humanizing work.

We absolutely worked hard.

We absolutely were goal driven and results driven.

People FIRST, process and purpose.

And we absolutely had a wicked boat load of fun along the way.

Chris passed away this past August.

I am forever grateful that my first real job taught me that humanizing work is not inconsistent with driving results.

P.S. This won’t be my last post on the impact of the culture at Lang- the learning is a gift that just keeps on giving.

Do you know where your team culture ranks?

Do you know how your Board culture ranks?

What if it was really easy to measure your Board and team cultures to figure out where the gaps are and fix them!

We all know what gets measured gets done.

Right now I am working with small to midsize non-profits in arts & culture and sport industries.

Think of it like a Culture Tune-up to start 2022 off with an easy assessment and a clear roadmap of where to go to get aligned and moving in the same direction.

I am a certified Culture Transformation expert and focus on values based leadership to drive measurable results.

The rankings you see in this image were developed by Richard Barrett and The Barrett Values Centre.

This Barrett model has been used in 94 countries with over 6 million assessments in the past 21 years.

My personal mission is to help bring this tool and this insight to Canada’s smaller organizations so they too can benefit from the world’s leading expert in values based leadership and culture transformation.

Do you know your culture score?

Do you have a road map to take your culture to where you know it can be?

What if it was easier than you think?

Are your team meetings feeling like radio silence?

Are your zoom calls filled with a list of names and no one is on video?

Do you wish that your staff would come up with more creative ideas themselves rather than just brining you the problem?

Chances are there is an element of fear that lives in your culture.

And this fear is squishing people’s sense of freedom to speak up without consequences.

Take a listen to this short video where Gerry and Gayle talk about the impact of fear in places of work, and on the flip side where Ruth highlights how our environment at Lang Marketing created a culture of freedom, trust, and respect where creativity and problem solving flourished.

In the end, your team culture can be measured and you can identify where the fear is coming from so that you can fix it.

Your culture can be measured and we all know what gets measured gets done.

Me and my inner Axl Rose, and Allison for the win.

No offence to gingers everywhere but I think Axl Rose was my first ginger crush (at that time we didn’t know about his abusive behaviour and his name is forever closely associated with a body odour spray for men so that makes me feel a teeny bit better.)

Today is about my stellar karaoke skills and culture, good and bad.

What you are not seeing here is my awesome below hip leg sway. I perfected the art of stiffening my legs and kicking one ankle into the other, kind of like a pendulum swing. Just the way Axl did it.

KEY TAKEAWAY - Culture is made up of those seemingly innocuous moments of human connection and shared values.

Allison and I were peers. Oh wait- no we weren’t! HAHAHA….oops my bad. Seriously, I just realized that now as I am writing.

Allison was technically ‘one rung’ above me. How is it that I forgot that?

Because she never made me feel that I had to remember that.

Here we are- aligned in a love of music, fun, silliness, and joyful play!

This was an office gathering where we literally were releasing the pressure valve of some really intense work months!

It allowed us to connect with each other outside of the deadlines.

We were aligned in wanting to be real, to relax, to play and because she never made me feel ‘less than’ as a subordinate I felt safe to play.

So if Culture is defined as those beliefs, behaviours and values of its leaders, how are you leading? And if Culture Entropy is defined as the measurement of the unproductive work, fear, dysfunction, and spin that lives in the team... do you know what is causing that?

Do you know how big your Culture gap is?

What if you could fix it, and drive greater results AND fun at work?

Your culture can be measured and we all know what gets measured gets done.
