[An Appraiser's Perspective]

Today, we're examining the artistic process and purpose behind German emergency money notes known as Notgeld.

In the aftermath of WWI, metal value became greater than the face value of coins. As a result, citizens started hoarding silver, copper, and nickel coins, which depleted the economy of the small change required for daily activities such as buying bread or using transit.

Authorized by the municipal government of Zeulenroda, these notes were meant to solve a massive shortage in small change.

Production relied extensively on multi-colour lithography and regional graphic artists. Each artist drew their designs directly onto flat limestone blocks or zinc plates using inks or crayons. To achieve the vibrancy seen here, a different plate or stone was made for each colour of ink. The paper underwent multiple passes through a lithographic press, ensuring that each layer was carefully registered.

In 1921, German towns recognized that collectors from all around the world were interested in acquiring these colourful specimens. To increase revenue for town funds, municipalities intentionally printed large quantities exclusively for collectors.

If we look closely at the bottom border of the top note, it includes a legal warning: "Dieser Schein verliert 1 Monat nach Aufruf seine Gültigkeit" (This note loses its validity 1 month after a public recall notice). These were intended to be a strictly local, temporary patch for the town's economy.

Discussing design ....

The Census stamp was issued by Canada Post on June 1, 1971.

It features mid-centry moderniist graphics to symbolize "modern" data tracking--incorporating computer tapes (at left) and circles linking human figures, meant to represent population data and connectivity.

Designed by German-Canadian graphic designer Hans Kleefeld, this stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of Canada's first official national census under Confederation.

Kleefeld taught at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) for many years and subsequently at Sheridan College, both in Ontario. He was als one of the Canadian designers featured in the 2018 documentary Design Canada - a film by Vancouver-based designer Greg Durrell. 🎥

This vintage handled mirror celebrates the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

These vanity items were produced by Hussey-Dawson Ltd. (John Hussey and Francis Dawson) in Birmingham, England and were constructed using a combination of mid-century industrial materials.

You can't tell from the photo, but when held up to the light, there's a noticeable shimmer around the tiara and jewels. Creators like Gwenda accomplished this by putting a layer of textured tin or aluminum foil directly under the printed design. The ink on the paper or film was clear enough to let light through, reflecting off the metallic foil below, creating in a glowing, jewel-like effect.

In my line of work I see lots of commemorative pieces. Ranging from porcelain teacups to cut-glass stemware to stamps to tea towels.

This piece is different.

The Habitant Farm, Oil on canvas was a gift of Gordon C. Edwards, Ottawa, 1923, in memory of Senator and Mrs. W.C. Edwards and is part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

[An Appraiser's Perspective]

Today we're looking at 1968 & 1975 Teamsters dues buttons / membership pins

Each of the two celluloid pinbacks displays the Teamsters logo with two horses facing outward atop a spoked wagon wheel. This design harkens back to 1903 - an ode to the original teamsters who operated horse-drawn freight wagons (before the rise of commercial trucks.)

During the mid to late 20th century, labor unions provided new buttons to members after union dues were paid. Colors were changed each year or every quarter to help quickly identify expired memberships on the job site.

Although modest in value, these types of pins are popular among labor history fans, collectors of political memorabilia, and current or former members of the Teamsters Union.

Remembering the inspirational work of Yayoi Kusama ❤️

I still recall reading this quote for the first time and learning more about how Kusama viewed individual human identity - as isolated and burdened by ego.
