BREAKING NEWS: Canada to allow international students to work off-campus over 20 hours per week!
From November 15, 2022 until December 31, 2023, international students who are in Canada and have off-campus work authorization on their study permit will be allowed to work over 20 hours per week off-campus while class is in session.

The Government of Canada has extended the time international students can study online from outside Canada and have it count towards Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility.

Students starting programs from September 1, 2022, to August 31, 2023, will be able to study online from abroad. However, no more than 50% of the credits earned can be completed outside Canada to remain eligible for a PGWP.

Starting on September 1, 2023, any studies completed online from outside Canada will be deducted from the length of a future PGWP.

The Work Permit Extension question

If your application to extend your work permit is approved by IRCC, you will be given a new date for your authorized stay in Canada and continue living and working under the conditions of your new or extended permit.

If your application is refused, you are considered in status until the day IRCC made the decision on your application. If you are refused the extension, you have lost your status in Canada and you are no longer able to work or study.

You have 90 days from this point to apply to IRCC to restore your status. While you wait for the decision, you are not allowed to work or study but you can remain in Canada.

Express Entry is a system, not a program
Express Entry is an application management system introduced by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in 2015. It was brought in after it was found that the existing system was not efficient in processing the overwhelming number of applications that IRCC receives.

How does Express Entry work?
The first step is to find out if you are eligible. You then need to complete your profile to express your interest in applying for status as a permanent resident in Canada. You will then get a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. If you receive an ITA, submit your completed electronic Application for Permanent Residence.

IRCC has processed more FSWP applications over the past 2.5 months than it did in all of 2021. In February, it processed the FSWP applications of over 4,300 people, compared to the roughly 600 people it was processing monthly for much of 2021. As of March 15, 2022, there were about 41,300 people in the FSWP inventory, a decrease of 4,000 people over the past two weeks. To put this figure into context, in the past 2 weeks, IRCC achieved what it took it 7 months to do in 2021 (i.e., process 4,000 people in the FSWP backlog).

A new survey of over 13,000 prospective immigrants by World Education Services Canada shows that interest to move to Canada remains strong despite the pandemic.

WES reports there is no decrease since 2020 in respondents being interested in immigrating to Canada. Nearly 52 per cent of respondents said the pandemic would have no impact on their immigration plans. Nearly 93 per cent said the pandemic would either have “no impact” or make them “more interested”.

The current plan aims to welcome 411,000 new immigrants this year of which nearly 60 per cent are set to arrive under the economic class.

Canada held a new Express Entry draw on December 10. A total of 1,032 candidates were invited to apply for permanent residence.

Invited candidates had previously received a nomination through a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) adding 600 points to their base human capital score. As a result, the minimum cut-off for this draw was 698.
Since Express Entry was launched in 2015, IRCC has only held 38 PNP only draws. Most times they render less than a thousand invitations, with the exception of this draw and the June 23 draw when 1,002 were invited.
IRCC has only been holding PNP draws since September. This is now the seventh such draw in a row. In the previous Express Entry draw, IRCC invited 613 candidates with scores of at least 737.
