Taking A Canadian Citizenship Test in 2021

In March 2020, the IRCC suspended Canadian citizenship tests due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. With safeguards in place to ensure proper identification, the IRCC has launched a new virtual option for those taking Canadian citizenship tests.

The IRCC will be testing this process over the next few months starting with a small group (roughly 5,000 people) to try it first that already had the in-person citizenship test scheduled prior to the pandemic that might’ve been canceled!

What To Expect During Your Online Citizenship Test
Before the test, those participants will be asked to confirm their identity through personal information, and they will have to take a photo of themselves and their ID documents with a we**am before the test can begin. The online platform will continuously take photos of participants during the test which is a process that has been used to ensure the integrity of other tests that moved online due to the pandemic, such as bar exams or admission tests.

The IRCC will be notifying those invited to take the online test by email.

What If I Don’t Want To Take The Test Online?
You are more than welcome to wait to take the citizenship test in-person but there is no set date when that will be an available option!

Who Can Take The Citizenship Test?
The citizenship test is available to people who:

are between the ages of 18 and 54
meet the eligibilities for citizenship
are applying to retain Canadian citizenship

What to Expect for Canadian Immigration in 2021

Luckily, Canada began the largest vaccination campaign in its history this past December and aims to vaccinate those who want COVID-19 immunization by September 2021. If this follows through, Canada’s immigration system will begin to return to normal. If this is the case, here’s what we can expect from Canadian immigration in 2021:

Changes to Canadian Immigration in 2021

Travel Restrictions May Be Lifted
Travel restrictions were put in place for Canada during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lifting of such restrictions would help newcomer flows recover, which would give the country’s economy a much-needed boost.

Parents and Grandparents Program 2021
IRCC has confirmed that the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) lottery for the 2020 intake will occur in early 2021, most likely in January. With this lottery, IRCC will invite up to 10,000 applicants in the first round of applications to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada. It is also predicted that another PGP lottery will take place towards the end of the year, this time inviting up to 30,000 applicants.

CRS Score May Decrease
It is anticipated that the lowest CRS score might decrease as Canada has not met its target to invite enough immigrants this year. Due to COVID-19, we saw the lowest CRS score this past year was quite high, so we expect that it will decrease in 2021 in order to meet ITA targets.

Special pathways for Hong Kong citizens
Canada will soon introduce two new immigration pathways that will allow people from Hong Kong to apply for a three-year work permit or permanent residency.

Immigrants from Hong Kong who graduated from a recognized university in the past five years will soon be able to apply to work in Canada for up to three years. Also, Hong Kong citizens in Canada will be able to apply for permanent residency if they meet a new set of minimum requirements.

Huge Focus on Economic Programs
It is envisioned that with the increase of numbers the Canadian government has announced for the next 3 years, the impact and demand for skilled labour will increase and employers should look towards the Agri-Food Pilot, Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot, Francophone Immigration to facilitate this need. 2020 Canada PGP Lottery Starts Issuing Invitations

Beginning January 5, 2021, the IRCC started to hold it’s 2020 Parent and Grandparent Program lottery. This lottery was originally supposed to take place in late 2020 but had to be delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which took a toll on Canadian immigration as a whole.

A maximum of 10,000 applications will be issued and accepted for processing as part of the 2020 Parent and Grandparent program intake.

Those chosen for this lottery have 60 days to submit their sponsorship applications and supporting documents to IRCC. However, the IRCC has stated, “If you can’t get a supporting document due to service disruptions from COVID-19, include an explanation and/or proof you can’t submit it within the 60-day deadline in your application package. If you still don’t have it after the 60 days, you’ll get a 90-day extension.“

The IRCC will launch another PGP lottery sometime later in 2021, but this time they plan to accept a total of 30,000 new applications.

Latest PNP Canada Updates and Draws 2021

The Canadian Provincial Nominee Programs are a popular path for fast permanent residency in Canada. Here you will find all the updates and draws to the PNP Streams and Programs. There are currently eleven territories that participate in the Provincial Nominee Program. Each PNP has at least one immigration stream that is aligned with the federal Express Entry immigration selection system. Canadian Visa Updates 2020
Express Entry Draws
Over the past year, Canada has had a total of 34 Express Entry Draws. Canada is inviting thousands of immigrants to apply for Permanent Residency every month. Due to COVID-19 and border closures, Canada has experienced delays in accepting permanent residents through both Express Entry and PNP Draws.

Changes to Canadian Citizenship
The Canadian government ruled a change in the definition of “parent” under the Citizenship Act. This is especially good news for couples who have had fertility issues or couples of the same s*x.

Before this ruling, the Citizenship Act only allowed for foreign-born children to be automatically recognized as citizens if they shared a genetic link to a Canadian parent.

Now, the government will allow non-biological Canadian parents who are a child’s legal parent at birth to pass down their citizenship.

Canada Extends Time for Temporary Residents Stay
Due to the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic, Canada announced an extension of the time temporary residents are allowed to stay in the country.

This new policy also allows for previous work-permit holders applying for an employer-specific work permit to work while their new application is being looked over.

2020 Policy Changes
Travel Restrictions
Starting in April of 2020, travel bans and restrictions were instated in Canada due to the outbreak of Coronavirus. These restrictions have been pushed back multiple times throughout the entire year as Canada waits for the pandemic to come to a halt.

Exemptions to Work Permit Conditions
In May 2020, a public policy was put in effect to allow temporary workers in Canada with a valid work permit or authorization to work without a permit who are changing jobs or employers and have either an LMIA or LMIA-exempt employer-specific job offer to apply via the IRCC Webform for authorization to begin working in a new job while their work permit application is pending.

Processing Times Increase
Canada’s travel restrictions affected immigration, refugees, citizenship, and passport applications and differentiate by the situation. Each visa has a different processing time and application process, and some visas may take longer to process due to the travel restrictions on those visas.

Canada Increases Immigration Plan
On October 30th, Canada’s Immigration Minister announced that Canada wants to attract 401,000 new permanent residents by next year. This is part of Canada’s plan to better the economy by focusing on foreign workers. The previous immigration plan had a goal of 351,000 immigrants but now that COVID-19 hit, Canada wants to invite 50,000 more immigrants to boost the economy. These immigrants will be highly skilled workers and entrepreneurs with goals to stimulate the economy through working and opening businesses.
