Every profession has its own terminology and vernacular. Some of that is for the sake of efficiency; it allows for the communication of complex ideas quickly and easily, particularly when time is short and pressure is high. That's not always the case, though. Sometimes we use terminology to obscure and exclude. It is a practice that annoys me a great deal. I stopped to ask myself why.

Despite that, it is still the question at we struggle to answer. Our initial answers tend to be superficial. The safe answer is straightforward and functional in nature. If we want to make an impression, we need to start with different questions.
