ℹ️ Micheal Forster (1907 – 2002) was an Anglo‑Canadian abstract painter born in Calcutta, India. He was educated at La Martiniere College in Calcutta, Lancing College in Sussex, and trained at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London and the Académie Colarossi in Paris. Forster moved to Toronto in 1928, where he worked as a commercial artist and illustrator and became influenced by Surrealism and abstract painting. During the Second World War he served as an official Canadian war artist. Over his career he exhibited widely in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Europe, and his works are held in major collections including the National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian War Museum. Later in life he lived in Montreal and Mexico City before returning to Canada and eventually retiring to Cornwall, England, where he died in 2002.
Micheal Forster is recognized for abstract works that emphasize texture, colour harmony, and atmospheric depth. His compositions often feature layered brushwork and subtle tonal shifts, creating immersive visual experiences.
