In case you have not heard...
I am sharing the news of the passing of Eric Nesterenko, not only because he was a with the and a relative of mine - hence the name "Nesterenko", he was a very interesting man who live "A Life Fully Lived".
I reconnected with this side of my family over a decade ago and got re-acquainted with Eric and his three awesome kids - the cousins. I heard stories and adventures about the NHL that would not pass the sniff test by today's standards, but also shaped him into the person I got to know.
Three insights I take away from my time connecting and skiing Vail mountain with Eric... and some personal stories about Eric for the fans.
1. Learn whichever is the best way for you. Just keep learning.
STORY - During his time in Toronto, he worked towards getting a philosophy degree from - University of Toronto. I know!!! A hockey player in the 1950s getting a philosophy degree?
2. Be yourself. If you like yourself, truly stand by who you are, and live your . Cut out the BS. It's that simple.
STORY - Eric was very opinionated and sometimes, I STRONGLY disagreed with him... and I continued to listen to his different perspectives. He made no apologies about who he was and stood within that light. Sure, that is what made him get traded to Chicago but it also gave him a different space / team to play the game the way he felt should be played.
3. Create your own life.
STORY - Eric was a stockbroker, an actor, consulted on the set of the movie Youngblood, drove big trucks across the ice in Alaska, hockey coach, etc. He even negotiated to stay in Toronto during the week for the first year he was drafted to Chicago to finish his studies at . Life after hockey, when he found himself lost and disoriented, he reinvented himself as a ski bum / instructor. I called him "The Silver Bullet" as he descended Vail Mountain until the age of 87!
He really did create "A Life Fully Lived".
I invite you to read the article which is another perspective on Eric Nesterenko.
