Which is better a front load or a top load washer?
The answer, hands down, is a front loading washer!
Front load washers use less water, wash more gently, thoroughly and allow for a higher concentration of detergent in the wash water. They also offer superior rinsing and do a much better job “balancing” the load before the high speed final spin.
Gentle and thorough… clothes are tumbled instead of being beaten, this allows fabric fibres to “relax” and release trapped soil. Delicate fabrics can be “rocked” instead of tumbled to prevent felting or damaging the material.
Higher concentration of detergent to water… if you’ve ever cleaned your greasy hands with straight detergent you know how well it works, front loaders only use enough water to get your clothes soaking wet, the detergent concentration is much greater than in a top loader, this helps get clothes cleaner.
Balancing… front loaders know if the load is balanced and if it’s not they redistribute the load to get it right. If you’ve ever noticed the washer taking longer to start spinning that’s what’s happening. If the load can’t be balanced the washer does a slow spin and exits the cycle. You can help your front load washer by doing full loads of similar fabrics, this helps create balanced loads.
Top loaders are second best in all departments. They use too much water to have a strong detergent solution, typically beat fabrics to clean them and have a difficult time dealing with off balanced loads. Some people have no choice to buy them because of laundry room restrictions but if you have a choice, choose a front loading machine.
