Citizenship News:
As of October 11, 2017 the partial changes to Citizenship Act which were set to take effect in Fall 2017, will be operational.
1. It means that, a citizenship applicant must be physically present in Canada for 3 years out of 5 years before the date of application. This residency requirement was previosly 4 years out of 6 years.
2. It is not required anymore to reside in Canada 183 days per each qualified year.
3. Each day spent in Canada before becoming permanent resident will count half of a day, 1 year maximum, within the five years toward the residency requirement, provided that the applicant has had a valid legal status during the said period of staying.
4. The ages of requirement to take language and knowledge tests reduced to minimum 18 and maximum 54 years. Previously it was between 14 and 64 years.

The new residency obligations for the Canadian citizenship will come into effect this Fall. The requirements of being present in Canada for 4 years out of 6 years and 183 days in each one year in the 4 years will no longer be in effect. The new requirement is to be present in Canada 3 years out of 4 years without any requirement to be present 183 days in each one year.
