“Wait… I thought it was lunch time?”

We were called to a warehouse after a raccoon made its way inside and headed straight for the lunch room. Apparently, this visitor knew exactly where to find the food!

After getting a couple of snacks, we safely guided him into our humane trap and brought him back outdoors. Lunch break is over!

Happy International Raccoon Appreciation Day! 🦝

I’ve spent more than 40 years working with wildlife, and raccoons still find ways to surprise me. They’re curious, resourceful animals. I’ve watched them carefully investigate a new object, work their way through a tricky space, and teach their young how to navigate the world around them.

In our neighbourhoods, a raccoon looking for a safe place to raise her babies may find an opening into an attic or garage. I understand how stressful that can be for a homeowner. It’s why our team takes the time to look for young, understand how the animals are using the space, and make sure the family has a way out before securing the entry point.

Days like today are a good reminder that we can appreciate wildlife while also setting boundaries around our homes. Give raccoons their space, keep food and garbage secured, and enjoy the chance to observe them from a distance.

To all the raccoons that have kept our team on its toes over the years: we appreciate you. You’ve taught us a great deal.

Just hanging out with my new friends at Gates Wildlife… and I’m VERY glad they showed up!

My mom had been locked out of the house while my siblings and I were still inside after another company installed the wrong type of one-way door over our entry point.

Thankfully, the Gates Wildlife team came to check things out. As soon as they opened the screen covering our entrance, I figured I’d come out and say hello myself.

This is why proper follow-up is so important during wildlife removal especially during baby season. Gates Wildlife doesn’t just install a one-way door and hope for the best. Their cellular cameras help them monitor what’s happening, watch how mom is responding, and make sure no babies like me are accidentally left behind.

Thanks to them, our family was accounted for and handled safely and humanely.

For now, I’ll just be hanging out with the crew. I think I like these guys. ❤️

It’s always amazing to watch young wildlife learn the skills they’ll need as they grow.

This baby Eastern Grey Squirrel is just starting to explore the tree, learning how to climb, balance and move from branch to branch.

At this age, everything is new. You can really see the hesitation at first, followed by a little more confidence with every step.

Before long, climbing these trees will be second nature.

Moments like this are one of the reasons I love what we do after all these years.

City raccoons have the same basic needs as any wild animal: food, water, and shelter.

This raccoon was caught stopping by a backyard pool for a drink…something he’s been doing several times a week.

Water is one of the essentials raccoons are constantly searching for as they move through urban neighbourhoods. Chances are, this raccoon has several reliable water sources throughout the area, along with multiple den sites he uses for shelter as he travels through his territory.

What made this visit especially interesting was how he was discovered. Muddy footprints kept appearing on the pool deck, which led to a little investigating and revealed exactly where this nighttime visitor was headed.

We were able to capture his visits using our cellular camera, giving us a fascinating look at where he stops, how often he returns, and how wildlife quietly moves through our neighbourhoods when most of us aren’t watching.

It’s always interesting to see just how well raccoons adapt to city life and the different places they rely on for their basic needs.

Raccoons don’t just find a quiet place to sleep…once they move into an attic, roof space, or wall cavity, they can quickly start making themselves at home.

That can mean chewing on wood, pulling apart insulation, flattening nesting areas and tearing through materials as they move around the space. Over time, what started as a small entry point can turn into much more extensive damage.

At Gates Wildlife Control, we focus on humanely removing the animals, identifying entry points and helping prevent them from getting back in.

Four Baby Raccoons… Behind a Shower!

This photo is from May, during one of our more challenging baby raccoon removals of the season.

A mother raccoon had chosen a very difficult-to-reach space behind a shower to raise her young. After carefully accessing the area, our team was able to safely remove all four 21 day old babies from the tight space.

Situations like this are exactly why baby season removals need to be handled carefully. When young raccoons are involved, it’s important to make sure every baby is found and safely removed before the entry hole is closed.

A mother squirrel was locked out of a home while her babies were still inside.

We were called to this property after the homeowners had hired a pest control company but continued hearing noises and were concerned the squirrel had found her way back into the house. When we arrived, we discovered that the other company had installed a raccoon one way door over the squirrel entry point.

Not only had the mother been locked away from her babies, but had she been inside the home when that one way door was installed, the setup could have prevented her from getting out as well.

As soon as we opened the screen covering the entry point, one of the baby squirrels actually came walking out of the hole toward us.

This is exactly why proper follow-ups are such an important part of wildlife removal. At Gates Wildlife, we don’t simply install a one way door and assume the job is finished.

Our cellular camera monitoring allows us to follow the animal’s activity in real time, observe how they respond to the removal process and identify behaviours that may indicate babies are still inside.

It also allows us to make adjustments when needed and confirm that the animals have exited safely and humanely before the job is considered complete. This is especially important during baby season as separating a mother from her young can create a much bigger problem and unnecessary suffering for the animals.

Wildlife removal isn’t just about getting animals out. It’s about making sure every animal is accounted for and removed safely and humanely. This technology takes much of the guesswork out of wildlife removal.

Thankfully, we were able to step in and make sure these little ones weren’t forgotten.
