Access Copyright

Access Copyright We make it easy for users to share content responsibly, collect payment for this use, and distribute the royalties we generate to creators and publishers.

Why we Exist…

Access Copyright exists to make it easy for everyone to remix and share published content. We understand that good content can be further enriched when people use it interactively. The pieces we select and share—whether as educators, students, colleagues or friends—reveal our unique perspective about what’s important, interesting, even beautiful. For more than 25 years Ac

cess Copyright has facilitated the remixing and sharing of content for educational and professional purposes. We have helped educators become their own anthology editors and have combined this with an assurance that the original creators and publishers also benefit, so that they can continue creating new and innovative works. This is vitally important to a strong Canadian culture and to all those who read, write, teach and learn. Today we have an opportunity and a responsibility to help ensure that our writers keep writing and our publishers keep publishing. We take this responsibility seriously and are dedicated to forging a future for copyright in Canada that works for everyone. What, How & Who....

Access Copyright is a collective voice of creators and publishers in Canada. A non-profit, national organization, we represent the published works of thousands of Canadian creators and publishers, and many foreign works. Our customers are educational institutions, businesses, governments and others who buy licences for the copying and re-use of published works. The proceeds gathered from licensed copying are passed along to the copyright-holders and help ensure the continued creation of new and innovative works. Looking Forward…

Making it easy for people to use content at their convenience and enabling payment back to creators and publishers continues to be at the heart of all we do as we transition into our digital future. The seamless integration of copyright clearance with the digital services used in today’s classrooms and businesses will improve peoples’ interaction with content, all the while rewarding creators and publishers for their work.

On this , we celebrate the enduring magic of books and the creators and publishers who invest their creativity, talent, time and passion to the enjoyment and benefit of readers around the world. We also celebrate the importance of copyright as a public good that ensures creators and publishers can be fairly compensated for the use of their work.

Today, we highlight the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage’s recent study on the Effects of Technological Advances in Artificial Intelligence on the Creative Industries. Their report is a strong endorsement of the ART principles: authorization, renumeration and transparency. Together, these will serve as a guide for government policy that will build a fair and equitable framework for AI that protects creators and publishers, and their copyright in their creations.
