Is happiness overrated?
There’s an incessant amount of content on social media outlets, blogs, books, coaching, etc. on ‘how to be happy’, with a persistent emphasis on happiness being the ultimate life goal.
In our pursuit of ‘happiness’, we tend to find ourselves, looking ahead, searching for moments that expire, for bursts of extreme positive emotion, for the tangible that fades, always desiring more…
What is happiness?
Happiness is in fact a pleasurable or satisfying experience, but it is also a state of well-being and contentment.
Here’s the key word: ‘contentment’ - a peaceful ease of mind, a still sense of constant fulfilment, which ultimately leads to a calm, balanced and boundless state of happiness.
Hence maybe we consider contentment as our pilot, to choose daily to live in the present, to relish what we have, to find meaning and gratitude in what we do, how we choose to live and who we choose to love.
Perhaps then, happiness will no longer be a goal, but simply a way of being.
