Six years ago today we were asked to present Mount Gay Black Barrel to the LCBO executives at their new SKU presentation event in Barrie, Ontario. This was the day it launched into the market and has since grown to become a mainstay on the LCBO shelves. We chose to showcase this great rum in its natural form and in a cocktail that let the spirit shine; in a Perfect Rumhattan:

Recipe:

2oz Mount Gay Black Barrel
0.5oz Martini Dry
0.5oz Martini Sweet
2 Dashes Angostura Bitters
1 Dash Orange Bitters
Flamed Orange Garnish

It’s a wonderful thing to have worked with this brand on the day it arrived in the market, and to see it still doing so well today. This was a great experience and a great memory.

Supporting local never tasted so good! While we are being mindful of social distancing, we are blessed to live amongst so many great local breweys here in Toronto’s east end like and . Saulter Street Brewery has a great selection of lagers and ales to pick up and enjoy at home. Also, if the face masks and busy streets heighten your anxiety as it does for many, this bottle shop is located off of Queen Street E, meaning it’s accessible and you also get space from the main road to take your time and enjoy the process of choosing your favourite beers. Thanks to the folks at Saulter Street Brewery and happy Saturday to all!

TONIGHT! Last week we hosted a tequila tasting club, through the Tequila Society of Canada, where we asked members to join us with their favourite bottle of agave spirit, and to tell us what they are drinking, and why they love it! This event was so much fun we decided to make it weekly, and this week we are extremely excited to announce a very special guest!

Julio Bermejo is the owner of the internationally regarded Tommy's Mexican Restaurant in San Francisco. He is the creator of the modern classic (and one of my all time favourite cocktails); the Tommy's Margarita, and a globally celebrated tequila expert, as well as a mentor to countless others who are now regarded as international tequila experts in their own right. Julio led the fight for 100% agave tequila over ‘mixto’ tequila, and the emergence of the category and the presence of so many great products on shelves in bars and our homes is in large part down to him.

Julio will be joining us in bringing one of his favourite tequilas to the group and telling us all about what it is and why it means something to him. Get ready to discover something pretty special I’m sure!

ANNOUNCEMENT! Last week we partnered with the Tequila Society of Canada and hosted a tequila tasting club, where we asked members to join us with their favourite bottle of agave spirit, and to tell us why that bottle meant so much to them. Our at-home restaurant game has gotten so diverse of late as we’ve been making more at home than drinking at bars. We’ve always been a huge fan of Espresso Martinis (who isn’t!) so we got creative with one of our favourite pick-me-ups today. We usually use tequila for the base in ours (it pairs SO well with coffee!), but here we went with some lavender infused Tito’s vodka. This infusion is super easy to make (recipe below). Lemon is another flavour we love with coffee, and it cuts through the sweetness nicely to give the whole drink a lift. Here’s a cocktail recipe for you to try at home:

Lavender/Espresso Martini:
1.5oz Lavender infused
1oz freshly made Espresso
0.75oz
0.5oz Agave Nectar
0.25oz Fresh Lemon Juice
1 pinch salt (we used smoked )

Lavender infused :
Combine 750ml Tito’s vodka with 0.25 cups dried lavender. Infuse in a cool, dry place and taste every 8hrs for depth of flavour. Just the eight was good for our palates!

Fine strain into a chilled coupe and take a moment to enjoy the crema you get from all shaken espresso drinks, just lovely to watch. Finally, enjoy! Go on, you earned it!

Soda fountains began as little more than an addition to pharmacies of the past, in a time when pills were bitter shots of alcohol which required a little sugar to “help the medicine go down”. With the addition of exotic flavours, clean ice and creams, the popularity of these new beverages exploded into a genre in their own right; evolving into crushes, frappes, malts and phosphates. We have had a LOT of fun with this particular class of drink in the past, here are a couple of our favourite creations:

1) Morning Glory
Cereal Milk
Strawberry & Banana Syrup
Chantilly
Rainbow Dust

2) The Pagan:
Dandelion & Burdock Syrup
Sweet Honey
Seltzer
Lemon Zest Ice Cream
Toasted Marshmallow

We LOVED working on these drinks and have built out quite a recipe book of custom creations at this point, so we thought we have to share a few of them with you, and yes they taste every bit as good as you’d imagine!
